Che Guevara
...What? You were expecting me to start the conversation? I don't know anything about him except that hipsters like to wear his face on t-shirts. I can find sites that claim he was appalled by the poverty and condition of his country and so overthrew the dictator and is a revolutionary hero. And then I can find sites that call him a violent commie anarchist and that it's good that the CIA took him out.

Someone throw some information my way. Let's get this guerrilla party started.

"We see you cry. We turn your head. Then we slap your face. We see you try. We see you fail. Some things never change."

RE: Che Guevara
Why not both?

It was a revolutionary guy, so if he's a hero or a villain will depend on how you feel about the whole cuban revolution thing. I think he was a big part of latin american history and he helped define our cultural-political idiosyncrasy and I think it's a good thing, specially because the lefty point of view helps to stop the advances of the more violent forms of capitalism.

I don't like the fact that he's idolized, he was just a man and he was a violent man, not without reason but violent in the end. And I don't like any form of violence, no matter how justified it seems.

RE: Che Guevara
I know that the guy who helped the CIA capture him was Klaus Barbie

Better known as The Butcher of Lyon

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_Barbie

He was a captain in the SS and head of the Gestapo in nazi occupied France. In his role there, he oversaw the deportation of the jews of France, the crackdown on French resistance, several massacres and the general harrasment of the French people.

Crimes for which he should have been hanged right after the war ended.

But because he is became expert in France for tracing and exterminating armed gurillia movements, he was recruited by the CIA and they allowed him to emigrate to Bolivia where he would help in the name of the CIA to track down and extrminated communist and left wing movements for various fascist regimes in South America. This would strain releations between America and several South American countries with France - which simply wanted to see him in a court and then in a French prison.

Which wouldnt happen until the collapse of the fascist regimes in South America, after which he was extradited to France.

Whatever you may think of Che Guevara, the way in which the CIA and the Bolivian government captured him is easily one of the most shamefull chapters in the history of the CIA and the Bolivian government.

If we had to choose between these two narratives, which is more likely? IMHO, there are a hell of a lot more narcissistic sociopathes in politics, than there are saints.

Softly, softly, catchee monkey.

And the character Hans Lander in the movie Inglorious Basterds is based on him.
