Chemicals from fracking wastewater can taint nearby fresh water
Scientists say chemicals from fracking wastewater can taint fresh water nearby

By Darryl Fears, May 11th

"The boom in unconventional drilling for natural gas known as fracking hit so fast that scientists have had to scramble to determine whether it’s safe for humans and the environment. Mostly they’re still trying to catch up.

But a study by the U.S. Geological Survey appears to have answered a critical question about the millions of gallons of chemical-laced water that are injected into the wells to fracture rocks and release trapped gas. Is there any cause for concern when that water is stored later, whether in treatment facilities or special underground wells?

The short answer is yes, said the study’s lead author, Denise Akob, a USGS microbiologist."

They do a shit-ton of fracking here in OK, just great!

Yep, energy self-sufficient, so long as you don't mind tap water that poisons you and can be lit on fire. Dodgy

Invest in a reverse osmosis system.

RO systems are no better than the membranes that they use. They can be impermeable to some ions while letting others through quite handily.

Sadly, the article didn't contain links that I could find to source material from either the USGS or the EPA. Just links to ads and more WP articles. Sloppy reporting IMO.

Any activity can release chemicals into the environment. Given enough operators it will relase chemicals into the environment. The key is effective regulation and enforcement. Bleed their balance sheets with fines and they'll either clean up their acts or bugger off completely.

This part was much more worrying: "Oil and gas companies have refused to reveal what they use, saying the information is proprietary, like the secret ingredients used to make sodas."

If you are releasing it into the environment you don't get to hide behind proprietary industry secrets. Tell us what it is or cram it up your ass.

It seems to me if we have to poison our environment in order to make it more fun and profitable then we value the wrong things. I think the "Industrial Age" will also be known as the "Selfish, We Don't Give A Fuck How We Poison You" Age.

Or we will go extinct because we shit in our own nest to much.

Both false claims which, despite environmentalists screaming about them, have never been linked to fracking.
