RE: Christian vs. Humanist Morality
I don't condone rape and the bible doesn't either just in a patriarchal society women had no say about sex though I've read that their laws said they couldn't force sex on their wives but they did divorce then if the woman didn't have sex and the women got child support. I think greedy leaders corrupt everything.

His posts are an awesome example of the fact that we do not get or borrow our morality from religions and I believe it could be argued that humanist morality is superior to that based on religious belief.

I've been thinking about that the last few days as SV has demonstrated more and more how contemptible his opinions are.

Does religion corrupt a basic sense of morality or are people with no moral compass attracted to religion since it gives them excuses and reinforcement or is it a mixture?

Consider

That's a really good question, unlike SV I have no problems admitting I know jackshit about philosophy apart from the absolute basics. My own personal gut feeling is that the religions corrupt the basic sense of morality that i believe most people apart from psychopaths intrinsically have, I've met people who were thoroughly reasonable before religious indoctrination but who turned into bigoted vindictive judgmental assholes afterwards. Religion is in my view highly toxic and corrosive but equally I have to say this is not true of all religious people so its also the nature of the religious philosophy they buy into that must be taken into consideration also.

Not much of a god you have there if it couldn't teach the Israelites proper morality and dismantle the patriarchy in favour of something more egalitarian. No

What bible are you reading? Consider

I am not accountable to any God. I am accountable to myself - and not because I think I am God as some theists would try to assert - but because, no matter what actions I take, thoughts I think, or words I utter, I have to be able to live with myself.
