Christianese: a dictionary for the atheist
The idea of this thread is to try and get definitions that we atheists can understand when a theist is talking.

Often in debates when we are talking to a theist they have redefined a lot of words to either win the debate or to make their view of god consistent.

So for a bit of clarity I'll make a list of words with the religious definitions.

Amen - like saying that's true.

Anointing - a symbolic way of having god on your side, usually done by covering somebody with a liquid

Blessing - receiving or giving god's goodness. A beneficial thing for which one is grateful; something that brings well-being. God's favor and protection

Discernment - Being directed by the Holy Spirit.

God in the modern times, it's thought of as being outside of the universe that can change anything in ours. However this usually is interpreted as a subtle change of events that profits the believer. Sadcryface

God's Will, God's Plan - the concept of god having a plan for humanity. The plan is a mystery that you can gain some knowledge of by, praying, reading the bible or listening to some preacher.

Inspired, inspiration - A divine influence directly and immediately exerted upon the mind or soul, or God speaking through a person.

Logic - a characteristic of god, see reason

Morality - good equaling that which is in accordance to God's will/law, and bad that which is in opposition to God, or of the devil.

Persecution - a broad term describing mistreatment of one group by another. In the religious since it can be anything from mocking ones belief to the full scale annihilation of a religious group.

Reason - a gift from god that separates humans from animals, used to discover the nature of god's creation, and god's truth.

Sin - an act that violates god's will

Soul - it's basically an immaterial conciseness that makes up a person, IE an invisible brain, that survives death.

Testimony - a story that some how proved that god is real to the believer, often used to persuade others to believe.

Worship - the obligation of God's creation to give to Him all honor, praise, adoration, and glory due him because he is the holy and divine creator.

WIP will add more.
My sources are ironchariots.org, wikipedia, carm and actual Christians.

The atheist is a man who destroys the imaginary things which afflict the human race, and so leads men back to nature, to experience and to reason.

What's with the anointing? I always thought that was weird.

It's just an outward sign that you have been filled with the Holy Spirit.

Anointing means someone has been chosen by god to do some sort of mission. The Blues Brothers were anointed because they were on "a mission from god."
Messiah means Anointed One, so when people made up the story about Jebus, they called him a messiah which meant he had come on behalf of god. His "anointing" was symbolized with the woman (who maybe was Mary Magdalene) dumped a bottle of fragrant oil on his feet. The Old Testament talks about anointing being done by pouring olive oil over someone's head. The oil flowing down one's face symbolized the spirit of god coming into this person to do god's work.

The word worship should be added to the list. It can mean so many silly things, but to a Christian it is a holy, sacred and serious word. Even in Buddhism the words simply means an affectionate and endearing admiration or respect, but to a Christian is means give your all, literally, and follow the God being worshiped no matter what. For a Christian there is no grey meaning to this word.

There is an ad running on TV here that says:

"You have been anointed by god and he wants you to be rich."

Then it goes on about how he wants you to be wealthy etc etc.

That's what got me wondering about the anointing.

Sermon, pulpit, and pews seem to be exclusively Christian terms.
Also, VBS, Revival, Witnessing, Testimony, Tent Meeting, Communion, Saint, Brethren...

Not to mention "Brother" as a title ie like "Mr."

Pastors are known as "Brother _______". I would be known as "Brother Jeremy".

Nuns and monks are also brothers and sisters, and priests are fathers.
