RE: Closet Atheist? Not sure what to do
In addition to Morondog's rationalization on Pascal's wager one could also point out that as Seth puts it "Pascals wager is a huxter's argument."

Basically by putting any stock in Pascal you are questioning god's omniscience. If you really don't believe but pretend to do so you are in essence trying to cheat god and I'm sure that he would quite aware of this. It is a trick question, either you are have true blind faith or your a liar and a sinner.

oOOhh they love this one! This is like the lynchpin of Catholicism right here:

ARGUMENT FROM SACRIFICIAL BLACKMAIL
(1) Jesus died for your sins.
(2) Therefore, God exists.

and I hear this every time they open their mouths:

ARGUMENT FROM SUPERIORITY
(1) If God does not exist, then I am an inferior being, since I am not "special" in a cosmic sense.
(2) But I am superior because I am a Christian.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

and nothing could be more true when you are dealing with the professional who has invested 20k in his websites flash homepage, has a 50 foot tall cross that is also a jumbotron infront of his church, that happens to have stadium seating and a bigger fish tank than most aquariums:

ARGUMENT FROM AMERICAN EVANGELISM
(1) Telling people that God exists makes me filthy rich.
(2) Therefore, God exists.

This site is amazing I have to stop reading these and go to bed...

Reading this website is hilarious

ONTOLOGICAL ARGUMENT (I)
(1) I define God to be X.
(2) Since I can conceive of X, X must exist.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

MY ARGUMENT
(1) I define my bank account to be 5 billion dollars
(2) Since I can imagine having 5 billion dollars, I must have 5 billion dollars
(3) I have 5 billion dollars

This is hilarious can't stop reading, are they serious? Please tell me they are joking

Yeah they are satirical but they certainly aren't just made up. This is the **** that passes for logic within fundamentalist circles. For example...

This: http://www.thethinkingatheist.com/forum/...iving-cell

is essentially this:

PEACOCK ARGUMENT FROM SELECTIVE MEMORY
(1) [Christian asks "stumper" question.]
(2) [Atheist answers question.]
(3) [A lapse of time]
(4) [Christian repeats question.]
(5) [Atheist repeats answer.]
(6) [A lapse of time]
(7) [Christian repeats question.]
(8) [Atheist repeats answer.]
(9) [A lapse of time]
(10) [Atheist leaves in frustration.]
(11) Atheist, you never answered my question.
(12) Therefore, God exists.

RE: Closet Atheist? Not sure what to do
I agree with what most people have been saying. I know how it feels to have discovered something so significant, you would want to share this with as many people as possible. But you have to realize that most people are not ready to give up their beliefs. That's how deep religion is entrenched almost everywhere. Since you say that there are no overt conflicts as yet with your lack of belief, try to avoid rocking the boat with your friends and family for now. Be diplomatic in avoiding discussions about this.

Congratulations on your discovery/awakening!
