I figured out back in high school that taking handwritten notes was the best way for me to retain information. When I went back to school the concept of highlighting in textbooks made me queasy...I had been taught at a very early age not to write in books.

I'm like that, too. I have to write down things to remember them well.

Handwriting notes in class engages all three modes of learning- visual, aural and tactile. I took notes during class, but they wouldn't be all that neat, so I would rewrite them more neatly later. Makes for a great study aid, and for the information to stick.
