RE: College Talk vs. “Girl Talk” at a Texas Elementary School
According to the story I read, the plan was to teach the same curriculum to the girls' groups, but initially at a different time to the boys', so that the boys would start out with the college and career stuff and the girls would have those lessons later in the year. It seems the reasoning with starting with social relationships was that these are problematic issues for fourth-grade girls, which could be seen as a rather sexist assumption.

The parents' outrage made the school change the plans, and now supposedly the groups are learning the same curriculum at the same time, although still in groups segregated by gender.

It would be interesting, or maybe disturbing, to know how the material is presented to each group.

I hate girls-only anything.

Not only are they doing a shitty job of preparing girls for careers, college, and the real world--they are also reinforcing the same sexist stereotype to 4th and 5th grade boys and girls, which only aids in perpetuating this type of thinking for future generations.

Little boys must learn about careers, salaries and living expenses and not about confidence and friendships 'cos they should know about those things anyway and anyway, who needs friends on the corporate ladder? Little girls shouldn't be filling their pretty heads with big ideas Rolleyes They should instead focus on being warm and caring so that when they find the right man they can look after him properly.

I mean, fuck, it's like it's 1950 all over again.

Oh, I don't know... Maybe we just need to put a new spin on old ideas! I'm planning on "looking after my husband" one day. I'll be outperforming him salary-wise, and the extra income that he brings in should help us afford a housekeeper to do our laundry and make us our sandwiches. Big Grin
