Congressional elections
There are a couple of hotly contested seats tonight - in Georgia and South Carolina

Maybe I am one of those 'elite' (nope. lol) liberal coastal inhabitants, but I doubt either district in those states are going to go blue. I would love to be proven wrong, southerners.

and WTF is wrong with people who vote for Karel Handel???

RE: Congressional elections
Well democrats are hoping the special elections we have since the inauguration will kind of hint how the midterms will go. So far republicans have won them all. That might change tonight. But if republicans rack up two more victories today even with Trump's low approval ratings, it could be that democrats have really lost the pulse of the country. They have a good shot in Georgia.

RE: Congressional elections
Might not be looking good for the democrat in Georgia. He only had a bout 2,000 more early voting votes (dems usually rack up bigger leads in early voting) and so far the Republican is up by about 6,500 in election day votes and 4,500 overall.

Edit to add: early votes are still being counted so those numbers could change.

RE: Congressional elections
Associated Press just called the Georgia special election for Republican Karen Handel. She was outspent on ads 12.5 million to 2 million and she won anyway.

RE: Congressional elections
Enjoy your new homophobic religious fucknut, Georgia!

"She took anti-LGBT positions in 2006, when she ran successfully for Georgia secretary of state, and later. In 2010, seeking the Republican gubernatorial nomination, she gave an interview asserting her opposition to same-sex marriage, civil unions, domestic-partner benefits, and adoption by gay people.

“Marriage is between one man and one woman,” she told Atlanta TV station WXIA. “And I've been very, very clear about that. And the record is clear about any of the other issues like domestic-partner benefits or anything like that. In fact, in Fulton, I voted no on domestic-partner benefits.”

She went on to cite her Christian faith and say that same-sex relationships “are not what God intended.” She further said that gay parents are not in the best interests of children and that she would consider legislation banning adoption by LGBT people."

Well, I'm sure LDH is creaming in his pants on this one.

RE: Congressional elections
"Make Trump Furious" was this dudes campaign slogan.

The democrats are going to continue to lose if their platform is "anti-Trump." Just saying how bad Trump is won't get any election victories if the Republican you're running against is actually putting out a real message. Trump might not be popular but it appears that it might not be hurting republicans as much as the democrats had hoped. Dems need to find an identity and a message that resonates with voters. Right now it's Trump Trump Trump but that's obviously not working.

RE: Congressional elections
LDH,

You are not wrong on the need for message. Hard line GOP message is cast in stone; what is needed now is a clear "Its the economy, stupid" type line from the Dems, focussed directly at those who want a better life and are ready to work for it. They need a pathway, which the GOP are unlikely to offer.

It is all to play for when the message is right. Bernie Sanders, where are you?

D.

In addition to this point, it's possible that the shooting in DC might have helped the Republicans to motivate their base to show up at the poles.
