Conway's Game of Life
This has been a favorite of Daniel Dennett for the demonstration that complex patterns and processes can arise spontaneously from a few simple laws. It is one of the first demonstrations of self replicating patterns.

Try it for yourself. This site has a Java applet which allows you to run your own patterns using various rule schemes.

Enjoy!

One of the most impressive things recently discovered about these zero player games is the appearance of self replication. On May 18, 2010, Andrew J. Wade announced a self-constructing pattern dubbed Gemini which creates a copy of itself while destroying its parent. This pattern replicates in 34 million generations, and uses an instruction tape made of gliders which oscillate between two stable configurations made of Chapman-Greene construction arms. These, in turn, create new copies of the pattern, and destroy the previous copy.

"IN THRUST WE TRUST"

"We were conservative Jews and that meant we obeyed God's Commandments until His rules became a royal pain in the ass."

- Joel Chastnoff, The 188th Crybaby Brigade

I have programmed this in several languages over the years; first in IBM 360 assembler, then FORTRAN, C, latest in C#.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.
