Critique of Buddhism (from a former scholar of Buddhism)
Hi guys,

I think this subject will be of interest to a very small number of people in the forum however,
(1) If you're bored of hearing critiques of the bible, it's sort of a nice change of pace.
(2) Buddhism does have many of the same (fundamental) flaws as other religions, but the whole discourse is set in a very different cultural context, with very different philosophical assumptions, so...

...I do think that plenty of "experienced atheists" would find it enjoyable to read or hear a little bit about parallel problems in a radically different religious tradition.

For a casual example, the first few minutes of this video open with an anecdote about "faith healing" in contemporary Buddhism & Hinduism, and then goes on to discuss the perception of "pious ignorance" in the religion, and other issues:

And, by contrast, here's a heavier discussion of what we do and don't know about "the historical Buddha" (with direct comparison to the questions still surrounding the historical Jesus, Greek mythology, etc.):

Thanks for those.

I had quite an in depth discussion about the concept of god with a Buddhist yesterday.

Maybe it's a language barrier thing but it's always a struggle to get clear, unambiguous answers to specific questions. Or at least, I don't get the same answer from a Singaporean vs. a Vietnamese vs. a Thai Buddhist.

Dodgy

No. Demanding that we do your work for you is bullshit.

Are you the narrator in these videos?

The first video doesn't address Buddhism itself at all. It makes broad generalizations based on the actions of one man. Anyone with a penis can become a monk.

The second video amounts to a Gish-Gallop of confused, disjointed and poorly organized assertions, with a bunch of irrelevant Greek mythology and/or philosophy thrown in (for......what, obfuscation? -- appearances?).

TL;NGA.

Suggest that, if this is you in the video, you raise the point(s) you are trying to make, one by one, in writing here, instead of demanding that people here go through this mess of a video, having to type out what is said to and address it. That's bullshit.

If you are not the narrator, suggest you get some original houghts of your own. Barring that, suggest you bring up the points you want to discuss one-by-one, and support them in your own words. If you cite something from the video, cite the time it occurs.

We are not going to do your work for you.

How does one become a 'former scholar'?

You just forget everything? Blink

I will call him a liar and a dog here and now.
