The chem-cam is an example of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

It's a few generations ahead of any commercially available atomic spectroscopy instrument. Obviously with a big budget you can do more for one off missions. Doing spectroscopy on remote samples is a truly amazing achievement.

It's the sort of technological advance that will impact our lives in the near future. Soon we will have handheld battery powered spectroscopy instruments thanks to the development and miniaturisation of this tech in the rover. It has all sorts of commercial uses as well as for science, military, security, etc...

It is exciting... yet I wonder if they did find anything (like structures/pyramids or anything similar) if they would actually show people..... In all of its HD beauty.

Aaaaaaaaaagh! Stop the conspiracy bullshit! It hurts!Hobo

Of course we would see it - they're scientists. That's the way they roll.Yes

So...
I admit, I don't keep on on spacey things as much as I should, considering my enjoyment of all things spacey. However, I fail to understand why I should be excited by the pics posted here when we've already had shots like these for years. [Image: Spirit_rover_tracks.jpg]
Huh

These show that it landed safely, it's fully functional, and so on.

This is the test drive.

Although, the most impressive data will come from the spectroscopy instruments, to be sure, Curiosity will be able to go farther and see farther... it will be able to obtain higher definition shots.
