It's safe to say we will lose freedoms an nch at a time, as the "righteous" pass draconian laws to control " the bad guys"...

like limiting the right to assembly because someone decides your rhetoric is " hate speech".....

And that can happen if you're a member of the KKK, NAACP, The Boy Scouts of America, or the Ozzy Osbourne fan club......

It just takes some bureaucrat with an axe to grind.

Almost all countries who have hate speech laws have a higher index of democracy than the US. Interesting that when you neuter the ability of people who are opposed to democracy, women's and gay rights, racial equality or religious freedom, all those things do better. Seriously, fear of hate speech law is extremely unwarranted within liberal democracies. They are not the blunt instrument of the executive branch. If possible, they have done a lot to protect the free speech of minorities which is the one that is actively threatened over there. We need to remember than less than a century ago almost all liberal democracies had white supremacist and phallocratic policies.

Freedom is servitude to justice and intellectual honesty.

Nobody said it was.

I thought I made my point.

Perhaps not.

Don't be in such a hurry to hand over the keys of power for the sake of " being nice".

Draconian laws passed to take care of a problem frequently turn around on those that pass them, and bite them right in the ass.

Speech that is uncontroversial doesn't really have much need for protection. Minorities in the US do not face obstacles to free speech as you suggest, and hate speech laws will not address this non-existent problem.

How can a country that limits speech even be considered a democracy?

By understood definitions... and did the US not exist as a democracy to you for its first century and a half... the way free speach is seen today gets acted as if it was always that way...

It wasn't prior to the early 20th century yet prior many folks were jailed for speech and creating art or books that simply said profane and modern things.

Before the supreme court began being all proactive in judging to say, oh yeah banning books is nonsensical and jailing a protestor for talking is too much, the free speach idea was more limited in how people read the bill of rights. I don't get why people just accept 20th century things as the way the US ought to be and always was.

"DreamHost claimed that the complying with the request from the Justice Department would amount to handing over roughly 1.3 million visitor IP addresses to the government, in addition to contact information, email content and photos of thousands of visitors to the website, which was involved in organizing protests against Trump on Inauguration Day.
“That information could be used to identify any individuals who used this site to exercise and express political speech protected under the Constitution’s First Amendment,” DreamHost wrote in the blog post on Monday. “That should be enough to set alarm bells off in anyone’s mind.”
