It turns out America is not the only country that has to deal with uber religious school boards handing out biased creationist material. Turkey is usually the number one country in the world that rejects evolution on various polls. That's why it's no surprise that the Istanbul school district recently handed out books to over a thousand children that claimed Darwin was a "hook-nosed Jew who kept the company of monkeys." When teachers protested the books, the school district--just like their American counterparts--claimed they didn't know the books said that. Cough...BULLSHIT!...cough. You can read about it here:

I would say this notion of him hanging out with monkeys came about not too long after his publication of The Descent of Man (1871), where he provides his evidence for why we evolved from an early primate species. Here is a famous political cartoon of him that came out after his book:
