I don't think we can even say skepticism is a universal trait among atheist.

Yeah, you're right.

That's all I had. Tongue

People used to laugh at me when I would say "I want to be a comedian". Well nobody is laughing now!

Nope, you are adding baggage.

An atheist is one who lacks belief in any gods. Period.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

If we are going to do this I insist on integrating watching porn in atheist rituals.
We are having rituals aren't we?

I wonder if the pastafarians would let us borrow their "I'd really rather you didn'ts." Much better than commandments imo.

RE: Define Atheist: What Does It Mean To You?
I have seen a few responses to this thread, most are negative in regards to its existence. Yet, I am wondering how many of you actually considered the main point in the original post. Here it is again:

Quote:Therefore, I am asking for your opinions on the character an atheist would have, as well as morals, ethics, and anything else that you think differentiates an atheist from the theist.

To give you an example of what I am getting at, here are a couple questions.

1. Do you think atheists are more honest and truthful than theists?

2. Do you think it is morally greater to not believe in gods as opposed to believing in gods?

My point is that personally I believe there is more to being an atheist than merely not believing in gods. For example, the fact that I do not believe in gods, devils, or anything supernatural gives me an advantage in seeking out the truth in the nature of things as opposed to theists who believe they already found the reason for the nature of things via God. Because of this, I feel I am not living a lie like theists are.

It's these kinds of things I am looking for in this thread.

How can anyone become an atheist when we are all born with no beliefs in the first place? We are atheists because we were ...

1. It depends on the individual. Atheists and agnostics are definitely going to be more honest in conversations that involve the age of the Earth or metaphysical claims. For what should be obvious reasons.

2. It depends on the individual, again. Morality is something that everyone has. It comes from the culture and household you grew up in and live in. I personally think atheists are (generally) more humanist and giving towards their fellow man, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Being an atheist doesn't grant someone instant morality or eithics....but being raised to believe that the creator of the universe wants you to hate gays and women certainly makes that person more prone to hate gays and women.

And people are responding that they don't generalize or assume other philosophies or ethics.

RE: Define Atheist: What Does It Mean To You?
I think of an atheist as someone who sits in front of an open fire and roasts peanuts while contemplating the true nature of existence and the world within our existence.

I think of an atheist as a sasquatch that is misunderstood and only wants to be left alone by hillbillies and sass-hunters alike.

I think of an atheist as an interdimensional being capable of frying your brains with the uttering of a word.

I think of an atheist as a little girl missing her toy on a rainy day and paranoidly searching around the house for it.

I think of an atheist as a flighty demon soaring into hell, late for a meeting with Beelzebub.

I think of an atheist as a physicist that shoots a laser beam into his partners head for revenge, seriously incapacitating him.

I think of an atheist as a dinosaur who ponders life in a questionable manner while devouring everything he can see, flapping his wings in the air.

I think of an atheist as a polar bear on the side of a coke bottle that is sitting empty beside me.

I think of an atheist as the soiled sheets of my bed.

I think of an atheist as a telescope waiting for its next change to open up to the cosmos.

I think of an atheist as a half written essay that is lying in a word program on my desktop waiting for me to be typing this.

I think of an atheist as a word processor that is ready to shut down my computer out of jealousy because I am spending more time on these forums than I am with by beloved word processor.

I THINK OF AN ATHEIST AS SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE IN A HIGHER BEING!
