Yes, and? He lost his 1912 because he failed to tailor Taft to his own liking and because he realized the consumer-manufacturer split was a losing battle for the presidency. That argument was then the platform for his new party, which successfully split the Republican Party.

Yes they swapped. To the best of my understanding it started during reconstruction and ended with Reagan's first term, more or less.
