.

We value them because they are rare, just as we value nearly every rare thing on our planet. Why don't we hear about dying firefighters and police? Because there are so many of them that at least one dies every day (maybe and maybe not, I'm just guessing at a probable figure). We can't possibly learn all their names, and so we won't gain a personal connection of any sort with them... and a personal connection is generally a good reason to feel grief over the loss of a fellow human being.

But you answered your own question, anyway. The market decides that a single football game brings in millions of dollars, and so owners (who still make millions after this decision) share those millions with the players. The high pay is what ensures that those who can play well do end up playing, and nobody "falls through the cracks" and wastes their talent. How can you object to someone else getting paid well for holding a rare talent (that was, according to Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, the end-product of 10,000 hours or more of practice)? Jealousy, I guess.

As I said I don't object to them getting the big pay check. I believe in free market, supply and demand, etc. What I'm saying is I believe we are a flawed society in putting this much value into something that is entertainment. Jealous, nope. Wouldn't trade what I have for any of it.

I guess as someone who isn't a fan of sports it's easier for me to say I don't value what they get paid. I think that the entire professional sports arena is way over-valued and way over-produced.

But.... um... wouldn't it be cheaper and better for your heart to go out and play those sports for yourself?

You realize that neither of those quotes disproves what I said right? Seeing as how I didn't even touch on the subject of whether or not I felt they got paid too much. Of course I do think that, and would like to add that their abilities aren't as rare as some might think. For instance, there are lots of players with MLB quality skills in central and south america, but they arent given the opportunity to display that talent, and they certainly don't make millions in the local ball clubs.

Besides, the only real competition in American sports is who can take the most performance enhancing drugs w/o getting caught(assuming its even against the rules), or stroking out.

I'm sorry, were you agreeing with my point about the value of rarity by implying that these undiscovered players should be given the opportunity to "make millions in the local ball clubs"? Or were you trying to object at my calling these skills rare by assuming that they are commonplace in other countries due to our lack of knowledge about how many good players there are in these places (an Argument from Ignorance)?

My girlfriend is mad at me. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried cooking a stick in her non-stick pan.

Sports careers are not the longest lasting careers. Often proffessionals press past their limits and end up with life long injuries. It's very accurate that they should make enough in 5 years to keep their lif ok. But they get paid too much. There is too much competition within draft. The amount proffessional baseball players made 20 years ago is still plenty to live off of your whole life after a few years.

I'm not a non believer, I believe in the possibility of anything. I just don't let the actuality of something be determined by a 3rd party.

I quit watching sports when they stopped feeding the Christians to the lions.
Everything after that was just boring.
