A Linguist Explains Why 'Laurel' Sounds Like 'Yanny'

I only hear Laurel, no matter what audio I use as a source. Consider

I tried all versions but the lower frequency sounded like yalauraly.

RE: Do You Hear YANNY or LAUREL...
I hear Yanny for the original and the versions where the pitch is shifted lower and laurel for the ones where the pitch is shifted higher. On CNN this morning it was played several times, and I heard yanny sometimes and laurel other times.

ETA: I did this with my son, who for the original hears laurel while I hear yanny. I took him to the page where it's slowed down and sped up--where we both heard yanny lower and laurel higher--and then when we went back to the original, I heard yanny and laurel at the same time...yanny stronger at the start of the utterance and laurel stronger at the end. So I seem to have accidentally trained myself to hear a Tibetan monk version.

I hear my brain cells' dying screams after subjecting myself to this abomination of an article first thing in the morning. Cringe-worthy doesn't do it justice.

Well, second, after reading how - shock, horror! - Kim Kardashian is, apparently, toxic, for selling appetite suppressing lollipops. You know what, there've always been appetite suppressing products and you know what else, some people may actually need them.

"Maybe don't take appetite suppressors and eat enough to fuel your brain and work hard and be successful," Jameela wrote on Twitter.

"And to have something to say about your life at the end, other than 'I had a flat stomach'.""

That enough for you, lady?

And you know what else? I don't give a fuck either way! (About the lollipop I mean. The "controversy", too, though Rolleyes )

I hear Yanny in the normal and in pitched down. In the pitched up versions, I hear Laurel. Weird.

I've only dealt with the first version, and last night I was solidly #teamyanny, but this morning, I've been traded and am now batting for #teamlaurel. I need to finish the article and other readings, so I'll probably chime in later.

The whole thing is just silly.

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.... on Donald J. Trump:

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.
