Do people dismiss you because of your atheism?
At the workplace, I noticed that people in my team have been ignoring my input and feedback regarding lots of topics like relationships, politics, and life in general. We talk philosophy but with a majority of theists (Muslims and Catholics) it always comes down to the word of God and the holy books. My ideas come second if at all.

My trick is that I try to get my words in last, so that people remember what I say. I often have to face counter-arguments and ridicule about my geeky lifestyle (because instead of practicing religion, I read and write a lot, and watch movies. And yes I happen to enjoy video games). Theists pretend to be interested in science topics to bait me into mockery instead of really learning anything.

Being the only "outed" atheist I usually don't get involved in religious talk because I don't have the energy to get into a heated debate about faith and morality. But the general feeling is that, because I don't believe in an imaginary friend, my ideas and wisdom don't matter to those who do (believe in said imaginary friend). There are times when I know someone is troubled and I want to help them... But they wouldn't let me knowing that I don't pray, or maybe they fear that I would try to make them lose faith in their god.

This is the kind of moments when I hate, and really mean hate, religion. What if I needed help and moral support? Who would offer to help me then?

Nope. Religion (or the lack thereof) is a private thing in Germany.

We would. And we will.

I don't think you are being ignored for being an atheist.

It's probably because you are female.

No. More just don't understand how I can not believe but no dismissing.

I tend to forget about that, being the only female in my team I assume I can be "one of the guys" but yeah... You're right, not everyone can get passed the boobs and of course with this crappy culture I have to work harder if I want to get any consideration. Anyways, no matter what I do it would be seen as over-compensation for being female.

Thanks for your reply, though. I appreciate honesty and sadly the only other honest person I know is a theist.

Yeah, I get a lot of that "it's a religion too" crap.

Aspiring optimist
Eternal Pragmatist.
With the uncanny ability to see all sides in every argument.

Ah, well, I was kinda joking about the boobs thing.

It didn't occur to me that you were in solitary confinement for that reason too.

Sadcryface The only woman and the only atheist....

Are you a black, transsexual too?

Hah, love those videos. They ring true even with the exaggerations.

I'm asian-italian-french and people get confused by that, too. Also being single with no kids doesn't help with social integration. Damnit, I didn't want this thread to become all about me... Blush

Point being, I have to hide my atheistic views when around most people. And most people here confuse religion with their culture (generally Arabs) so in order to spare their feelings I have to play dumb and nod to everything they say when teaching me about their culture. Down the road, they notice that I won't ask them about Islam again, or won't borrow words from Arabic (greetings, slang, sayings that always refer to Allah). If you've been suspecting it so far, yes I confirm that France (around Paris and other big cities) is becoming more and more like Africa. Oh no, I'm also a racist now Thumbsup Well done, me. Anyways, I'm not a hypocrite but having to mute my views as anti-theist is making me appear as one.

That has got to be the hottest combination!

I'm having palpitations.

I wondered about the name, Thanh. Vietnamese father?

That's my middle name and was my grandmother's first name.

That's another thing: being single is my choice, so is not having any kids (heard of the "voluntary human extinction movement"?) I'm also a vegetarian and drive a hybrid. There's not one day when something doesn't upset me or go against something I believe in. You don't see me bombing mosques or crashing into towers though.
