RE: Do you think there are advanced alien races out there similar to ours?
Didn't read the whole 4 pages, just the first few posts.

Yes, I think there are other species out there.
I am no scientist but from what I read, I find it very very unlikely that we are the only "advanced" species in space.
Of course I don't know if they would be based on the same elements as we are and if they even have the same elements or more, or maybe less. Noone can be sure.
Well everywhere in space we find the same molekules but imho that does not limit anything and is no final answer either. Maybe this is just out part of space that is built this way and relies on these physical laws.
Noone can be sure about that.
But I am pretty certain that there is more that just our planet, where stuff actually lives and evolves.

Maybe we have even been spotted by some alien species but left alone because we are such a violent species and need more time to get over this stage of evolution? Who knows heh.
I love speculating about this kind of topic Smile Thanks for opening this thread Smile

I think there are some intelligent beings out there, but I don't think we can find them and maybe they can't find us, or they won't find us because they're looking elsewhere.
I take this from the SETI project, they're currently scanning the universe searching for specific patterns on radio waves that would point to intelligent life, but I think the chances of them finding it is very small. Radio waves are far less useful for interstellar communications than letters are today. IF there's some intelligent species travelling the universe they don't communicate by radio, and if that is impossible they're probably too far away for us to "hear" them. If there's some technology similar to radio for interstellar or intergalactic communication we haven't invented it yet, and we should if we want to find them Sad

Alien 1: Did they recieve our message (dubstep)
Alien 2: Yes they have
Alien 1: And???
Alien 2: There dancing to it Thumbsup

According to the Drake equation, there are anywhere between 0 and 82 million.

The problem with the Drake equation is that it's a little hard to estimate the parametres involved. Some are based purely on conjecture.

It really makes me sad to think that there could be so many civilisations out there, but distances makes it unlikely for us to ever be able to contact them. I feel that there is potentially so much we could learn from our distant neighbours about ourselves and our universe.

Even if radio comms are no longer used by advanced civilizations what we are looking for is evidence that at some early point in their civilization they did actually use it. If we find a radio transmission from 50000 light years away it means they had the tech we now have 50000 years ago. They may be on to telepathy now or even no longer exist.

This was the exact point that I was trying to make about SETI.

People have this misconception that we are searching for radio messages. We aren't. We are searching for radio signals which might have absolutely nothing to do with communications, well at least not communications with the intent to communicate with other civilizations.

And again, SETI makes other contributions as well. It's relatively inexpensive. Like string theorists. Just leave these scientists be. The "chances are really rare" argument does not work because the chance for life is far more rare and it happened.

Yes,with billions of inhabitable planets it is highly likely however i never understood why people automatically assumed they must be more advanced than us.

Inhabitable? Yes, you're right. Billions of those. Keep in mind that the estimated stars in our Milky Way are in the upwards of hundreds of billions. This means an even higher planet count estimate.

The number of planets likely in the entire universe? Mind = blown.

Although I fully acknowledge that there has to be a first intelligent race and we could be it, I just don't think it's the case given the age of the Universe and the fact that we are a very young race. It would be more believable if our race was old.

I know, but given the time we've been using it, and we're already trying to find new ways to communicate, the window to find such comms are very low, I'm not saying is useless though, we might get lucky Big Grin

The idea that we are the "ancients" as in the first intelligent beings is at the same time depressing and exciting, it's depressing because we may never know other species which would be sad. Is exciting because we get to be the ancients, and that's so badass Cool

RE: Do you think there are advanced alien races out there similar to ours?
Given the scale of the universe it's a little silly to think there aren't, so I certainly acknowledge the possibility. I'd like to say I'm right in the middle and really don't know, but I feel like there are. Maybe not advanced, but I certainly feel there are other forms of life out there.
