DOC'S MISOGYNISTIC SUNDAY SCHOOL (NOW 100% COOTIE FREE!)
(11-02-2014 08:31 AM)docskeptic Wrote:  CLOSED
By order of the Health Department: Due to a heavy infestation of cooties, Doc's Misogynistic Sunday School is closed temporarily. This was caused by the attendance of a female student yesterday.

Parents are advised that cooties are an infestation of as-yet unidentified creatures that only affect juvenile females of the American human species. However, the symptoms are only manifested in the juvenile males of the species and consist of itching, sneezing, "the willies" and "falling in love".

No treatment is available. However, the disease is self-limited and resolves with age.

School will re-open tomorrow after fumigation and under a new name.

No refunds.

Whoa! Hold the phone. American human species?? American humans are a different species from all other humans???

This changes everything.

RE: DOC'S MISANTHROPIC SUNDAY SCHOOL (LOVING OUR FELLOW MAN)
OK. Time for another look at Matthew's use of the OT. The Slaughter of the Innocents was predicted in Jer. 31: 15 and fulfilled in Matt. 2: 16-18

When Herod found out that he had been tricked by the magi as to the exact location of the infant Jesus, he ordered the slaughter of all the boys two years and younger in and around Bethlehem. Meanwhile, Jesus was safely whisked away to Egypt because Joseph was warned in a dream to do so.

But there is no documentation of this act in Josephus, Tacitus or any other contemporary historian. The earliest extra-Biblical reference to the massacre is in the Proto-evangelium of James and that dates from the 2nd century CE. The famous quote by Augustus that it was better to be Herod's pig than Herod's son, when he heard about Herod's slaughter of the Innocents and his own son, was not reported by Macrobius till the 5th century CE.

Moreover, the prophecy in Jeremiah seems to be talking about the Jewish dispersion and not the birth of the Messiah and Jeremiah mentions Ramah which is to the north of Jerusalem while Bethlehem is to the south.

Think about this: Innocent babies were killed while the infant Jesus was allowed to escape with his family to Egypt.

Now, if God predicted the slaughter of the babies many hundred years before the event, why did he not warn the parents of the boys to escape like he warned Jesus's parents? To skirt this moral dilemma I've heard Christian scholars say that given the population size of Bethlehem and its environs, only about 20 or so male infants were killed.

It appears, then, that the sole purpose of those boys' short lives was to be slaughtered to fulfill a prophecy God had given Jeremiah several hundred years before.

Hey Doc,

So who cares if a few innocent kids had to be killed for God to prove a point?
So blasé.

A more intresting question is why are camels being used in the second millennium BC as per the OT before camels became domesticated?

Just amazing how the NYT can present as "news" something archaeologists have known for a long time.

What? What? Camels were not domesticated till the 2nd millenium BCE? Why, then, did God command the Israelites to avoid eating camels? In Leviticus 11:4, God says, "The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you."

How do you avoid eating something that isn't there?

And what does God have against camel toes?
