Anyways it doesn't make sense that because communism failed that Americans would still be afraid of it...

Not really, but it has a very negative meaning in the US. You can easily get a rise out of people by saying taboo words like communism in the US. If you ever watch Faux news you see such an exploit happening all the time.

Not so much. The new 'evil' is creeping socialism.

But that's why it's "the new evil" isn't it.

A lot of America was brought up during the Cold War (like around the 60's-80's), a time when communism is the enemy. So when people see this socialist stuff like the obamacare and stuff what they see is a step towards communism.
The whole, first it's healthcare next it's the entire private sector.
They see socialism as an entry step towards communism.
So to answer the OP, yes they are.
But, as young people, my age people (90's kids), grow up we haven't been brought up in this anti-communism era and so are generally more open to socialist reform because we don't have this negative stigma associated with it.

This is how the world works, one generation gets stuck in its ways then as the next generation comes through they get a little bit more wise and so you have these great conflicts of this side v that side until inevitably the older generation literally die out and the younger generation gets larger and eventually the younger generation "win".
Happens with things like human rights. Like take gay rights, you'd never get pro-gay reforms passed by the older generation but you would easily get it passed by the younger generation and so it's just a simple matter of time.

Wow, I didn't realize that it was still such an issue. The Obamacare stuff - is that his attempt of free health care to some extent? Could you suggest any good articles for me to read up on that?

It's really interesting that something as seemingly helpful as that would upset Americans as being socialist...we've had free health care for a damn long time, and I don't think Americans look at us as socialists...they may look at us as the big sister that complains a lot about what they do but doesn't actually do anything about it, or just simply funny-speaking people who live in igloos, but I've never been called a socialist when visiting the states or when meeting Americans here.

It's interesting to see that some of you brush the communist bit aside as though it has no effect, and some of you feel it really does have an effect still. I think that's the generational thing that 'earmuffs' was talking about to some extent.

Nothing is free. If someone is giving something out, then they got it from somewhere. If the people giving 'the something' out is the government, you had better believe they stole it. Whether it was from you, another citizen, or another country, it was stolen.

Europe is almost completely socialist, and we're not having a bad time here, so i just can't see what's so bad about socialism.
Especially in Belgium, We are having so much social care it's almost bankrupting the country.

I'd say "liberal" is the replacement word for "communism."

Although I see it used by republicans to describe anything that is not them.

Many things that are free haven't been stolen from anyone, for example water.
