RE: Does Porn Suck?
Oh, a small digression from the OP, but Japanese movies has everything to do with normal. It just depends on the movies we are talking about. For example, Japanese martial-arts (samurai) movies are the most normal martial arts movies you can find. The Chinese with their flying around kung fu and the Americans with their special effect could never come close to the realism of the Japanese martial arts movies. They are as normal as they can be. A lot of them are based on real people and events, historical, like Miyamoto Mushashi for example. I just love Japans history, so I enjoy their movies as well, most are B&W, very slow tempo of the movie, very little dialogue... Pretty specific cinematography, original and unique. That is why I love it.

On the other hand, they (the Japanese) make also tentacle gore-porn movies, so I can see why you think they do not make normal movies.

Now, back to the subject at hand...

I have nothing else to add.

Small correction - I didn't say their movies are not normal. I just said my lack of appreciation has little to do with them being (or not being) normal. The fact that I never saw the fascination of/with martial arts, explains some of my disinterest. But obvs. I'm not claiming they're a nation of lunatics Smile

I do appreciate certain parts of the Japanese culture, just not the more violent ones.

I was gonna say that they have tentacled-monsters and we have eel porn, but that might also be Japanese Sad

If 'normal' is simply a cultural thing then it seems a pity, as 'abnormal' tends to become a meaningless buzz word.
In some cultures the performing of clitorectomies on little girls is deemed normal and reasons given for this procedure.
The dominant culture sees these procedures as helpful; they do not see such as evil in any way.

As for Japanese torture porn, it may be liberating to some, even if authentic, and it may or may not encourage the pursuit of more realistic experience. Unlike some I am not convinced of the prophylactic benefits of some allegedly 'normal' pursuits, even under the ever increasingly tiresome personal rights mantra.

I never said that normal is a cultural thing, nor do I think it is. On the contrary, I was saying that why sexual sadism and masochism do exist they are paraphilias and for good reason.

Also, not even in my wildest dreams (or nightmares) would I think that clitorectomies are acceptable (hey, I'm opposed to religious male circumcision, too). Also, I'm the last person to defend something just because it's culturally prescribed or it's traditional. Actually, few things bug more than the argument 'well, it's a tradition, so it must be followed'. Every single tradition must be examined before being followed and everyone should do the examining for themselves, not just blindly follow what society tells them. Societies can and have gone wrong.

And guys, torture porn is not really porn. It's a movie genre (think Salo, Hostel, the Saw crapfests, etc.)

Perhaps you are not aroused by it, but that doesn't mean it's not really porn.

I fail to see to see the goodness of sadism and masochism, as benefit to the need of some of society per se.

Perhaps you could elaborate on why some in in society, chooses pain as necessary and relative to the joy where to this, is meanifull?

I think you're asking why some people enjoy pain as a part of sex?

I'll take a swing, and if I got the question wrong, apologies.

Some find the sensation of pain very erotic. The reason (for some) is that during sex, senses are heightened. The feeling of pain can be very intense, and coupled with sex, the pain can amplify the pleasure. It's kinda like turning all the lights on. You can see what you're looking at better. It's hard on the eyes, but worth it when you find a quarter under the couch.

No real problems with your answer.

As for peoples wants per se, I wonder, re aspects of all the vast generalities in terms of 'life',
just how we equate sanely to existence in the long term.............

I would if I had the foggiest. That's what I've been saying since my first post in this thread. I don't get how people may confound pain with pleasure and even less so do I get the sick enjoyment of watching others suffer. The only thing I get out of pain is the desire to help.

I've read a lot of books trying to understand why we are so fascinated with the pain of others and so far - no dice.

And for the n'th time - no, I don't get the good of sadism and masochism, nor do I get the whole BDSM thing (which is usually a far cry from real sadism but is still not my cup of tea. Not by a mile. Not by a thousand miles.)

And no, while some may get a hard on watching torture porn, it is not porn (some people may get a rise out of watching soap operas, that won't mean soap operas are porn). It's just a name, maybe I should've used the term splatter film, gore film, slasher film, but to me torture porn sums it up perfectly).

Really, how did I become the sick sado-maso defender of the boards all of a sudden Blink
