Does anyone else get sort of annoyed by the phrase "god is dead"?
You know what it implies. How could god be dead if it never even existed? People always say "god is dead" and I'm just like, please shut the fuck up.

I have only heard it once that I recall. And the person who said it clearly had no idea who Nietzsche was or what he meant by it.

"If we are honest—and scientists have to be—we must admit that religion is a jumble of false assertions, with no basis in reality.
The very idea of God is a product of the human imagination."
- Paul Dirac

Read Nietzsche. It is the idea the god is dead. Not an actual god. In other words, an outdated concept.

I will call him a liar and a dog here and now.

I had never heard that before. I had to Google it.

The phrase "God is dead" does not mean that Nietzsche believed in an actual God who first existed and then died in a literal sense. Rather, it conveys his view that the Christian God is no longer a credible source of absolute moral principles.

... still doesn't mean anything to me.

No.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_God_theology
It refers to a specific thread in human thought, which included some rather prominent thinkers.
It was an important milestone. It's important to know about.

Bonhoeffer " "The god who is with us, is the god who forsakes us". (p. 360 ). "Etsi deus non daretur", (we must live as if god did not exist)." (Letters and Papers From Prison)

That's the idea, silly. Tongue

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Nope. Doesn't annoy me anywhere near as much as it enrages the jesus freaks.

Atheism is NOT a Religion. It's A Personal Relationship With Reality!
