RE: Does "fate" exist?
I'm extremely anti-fate. There may be determinism lurking somewhere under the surface, but I proceed on the assumption that the universe has no friggin' clue what's going to happen next, and that at most there are strings of diverging probabilities that one can strategically tweak to one's benefit.

I'm sorry, but your beliefs are much too silly to take seriously. Got anything else we can discuss?

Fate is basically realizing in hindsight that something you're glad to now have is the result of a series of choices and actions that, had you made them differently, you might not have the thing you're thankful for. It's easy to think something was "meant to happen" simply because it did happen and you're pleased with the result.

Yeah, people have a real problem giving credit where credit is due, whether to human effort or chance.

Quantum effects may have meant a lot in the early universe, but with regards to the behavior of the cup sitting on my desk, not so much.

In the main, yes I believe we are fated toward specific ends, at the macroscopic level. Prediction is the bugbear.

You know what happens? Fast travel stations. You start out from an obscured map and as you explore the world locations of recall emerge. People who talk about fate and destiny are usually standing there. Tongue

Saying that something happened was fate is used when looking back. Then the steps to get to something can be outlined in a way to make it look like it was meant to happen.

Sort of a hindsight is 20/20 vision thing.

“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.”
