He did....there's a whole chapter of direct commands from god in regards to slavery...Exodus 21

It was a theocracy - they sought Gods will. The Israelites had just escaped slavery, and being in position to now take or become slaves themselves necessitated by poverty, set out rules to make slave owning fair. Considering God they made rules.

Fr0d0 you clearly are trying to stretch things.

Did you not see who is speaking in the entire chapter. The whole chapter is Yahweh giving direct commands. It's written as if the lord is speaking...

That and really.....if you had just escaped a slavery that had denied the freedoms of your people for hundreds of years would you really be so keen to do such evil to others.

And really you just lost everyone here when you start talking about making slavery "fair".

This discussion is over.

Quitting isn't victory Godless... it's just quitting.

Obviously the Israelites didn't consider slavery an abomination at the time. Like I said - it was a social norm. Greek philosophers such as Aristotle accepted the theory of natural slavery, that is, that some men are slaves by nature. This speaks of secular morality & not religious morality. Rather than carry on with the brutal oppression that they'd known, the Israelites set laws which protected slaves. It's the first thing on their list of laws after escaping slavery themselves.

They didn't understand God to be saying "take slaves coz it's good". In different times with different rationalisations, slavery is considered wholly bad. The secular morality turned against slavery. We couldn't rationalise it to be acceptable at all.

So what is being said in the bible isn't that slavery is good, but that in that society where slavery was acceptable, people should treat their own slaves well. And they knew exactly what they were talking about from first hand experience.

I must say, victory often lies in being smart enough to stop beating a dead horse. I think you are wise to stop wasting your time talking to a brick wall Godless.

So many cats, so few good recipes.

Maybe the forum should get a subtitle: "Hide if a logical argument shows up"

Well this certainly has been a constructive dialogue. I especially liked it where everyone carefully tried to understand the other person and contribute to their argument and move things forward. Congratulations all.

Peace and Love and Empathy,

Matt

frodo you seem to think that without god people will just do what they want for the hell of it, guess what, they do anyway, and not even some book supposedly written by god will ever change that.

Besides that, what do we adhere to except the law? most people follow the rules, why? because not only does it mean our society can hold together(which we all want) but it means we can work towards what we want in our personal lives.

Don't want to work? fine, become a fucking farmer and grow your own food. don't want to make your food? than work and buy your food from somebody else.

But ok lets say that somebody really, really, REALLY, wanted a platinum watch with diamonds making up the numbers and quartz instead of glass over the face(like the one I saw last week)
so what are that persons options?...

Break the law - Steal it
Pros:
Get it faster
don't have to go through any pesky paper work

Cons:
police get involved
possible physical injury if you put up a struggle
arrest
monetary loss due to fines
jail time
negative local media coverage

Obey the law - Buy it
Pros:
keeping with the law
ownership of item in question
no serious negative repercussions

Cons:
longer wait
one time monetary loss

Keeping inline with the law is much more benefitial.

besides if gods moral system says that abuse and hate towards another living being is acceptable, than Id much rather do things of my own accord.

Hey brother christian, with your high and mighty errand, your actions speak so loud, I can't hear a word you're saying.

"This machine kills fascists..."

"Well this machine kills commies!"
