Does love exist or can be sustained? Does familiarity breed contempt?
Personally I fell in love twice, but they did not last. I have never loved anyone other than family and students since that time.

They make so many movies about love, write so many songs etc. But is it a real thing?
I was just listening to Massive attack and these lyrics sprung the question.

Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Fearless on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me, makes me lighter
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Nine night of matter
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Of a confession
Fearless on my breath
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

It's tumbling down (as in love falling apart)
It's tumbling down (as in love falling apart)

RE: Does love exist or can be sustained? Does familiarity breed contempt?
Well I think love exists but it is other question that interests me more. In my view familiarity indeed could breed contempt - just a week ago I was working and living with some guy, at first he wasn't bad, but when I got to know his views I started to despise him as he was antisemite and fool which I gather is quite common mix. So familiarity could breed contempt but I doubt it's always the case.

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

It exists.

It's just not very useful. An evolutionary misstep.

Could it simply be sexually driven?

I disagree, all bits and yaks aside.

The evolutionary misstep or maybe it's a human culturally evolved misstep is this notion that "love is/should be eternal." It can come and go away and is perfectly fine. Just because Raymond Carver or Annoying bible verse #258 that everyone uses in weddings say otherwise, doesn't mean anything.

Of course it is. It's brain chemistry, dude.

Sexual selection but also kin selection... depends how one defines it... compassion, empathy, altruism or plain lust.

LUST = Luv U Short Time.

Yeah that ties in with my thoughts on the matter.

But does it last? Most American marriages last 8.3 years.

This is a reason I expect it to be physical lust given a dubious title to make it seem honourable.

Damn babies being useless for over a decade is why love is important... Maybe less so now days, but no weak ass single human mother 10,000 years ago is gonna do very well, and certainly not an unloved 3 year old child. Out of every animal, humans require the most extragenetic information to even survive.

I think familial love is a thing of sorts. But animals in the wild protect their young. Is that love?
