Dogs in Heaven?
I thought animals, aside from us hairless apes of course, weren't allowed in Heaven? What gives?

Quote:Trying to console a distraught little boy whose dog had died, Francis told him in a recent public appearance on St. Peter’s Square, “Paradise is open to all of God’s creatures.”

Oooof course.

It's funny how heaven changes constantly to fit people's desires. It's almost like they're making this place up as they go along.

Popcorn I put more thought into fiction than theists put into reality.

Ecclesiastes 3:

[18] I said in my heart with regard to the sons of men that God is testing them to show them that they are but beasts.
[19] For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts; for all is vanity.
[20] All go to one place; all are from the dust, and all turn to dust again.
[21] Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down to the earth?

BTW, I'm a Pink Monkey, not a hairless ape.

Insufferable know-it-all.Einstein God has a plan for us. Please stop screwing it up with your prayers.

Church membership is falling. Desperate times means desperate bullshit.

I am not accountable to any God. I am accountable to myself - and not because I think I am God as some theists would try to assert - but because, no matter what actions I take, thoughts I think, or words I utter, I have to be able to live with myself.

Whaaaaaa? Are you saying there is no rainbow bridge?

Quote:The Rainbow Bridge

inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,

Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.

Where the friends of man and woman do run,

When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,

Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,

For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.

Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,

Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,

Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.

All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,

Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;

Together again, both person and pet.

So they run to each other, these friends from long past,

The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,

Has turned into joy once more in each heart.

They embrace with a love that will last forever,

And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

RE: Dogs in Heaven?
I have some fairly recent experience with this. Last January we had to put down our 16-year-old dog. Our son was not quite 3 at the time. We struggled with this; more what we would tell him, how we would handle his questions, etc. never mind our own grief. One of the things we feared was that our well-meaning theist relatives would give our son some version of "he's in a better place," in an effort to comfort him. We made it clear as we talked with the older folks in the family that we didn't want any of that. We didn't really say it was because of religious reasons, we just said we didn't want to confuse Ben, and have him think the dog might come back.

Ben took it pretty well. When he asked what happened, we told him the dog was old and sick and that he died, and we brought him to the vet to be cremated. He cried a bit, and was sad, and the next day started playing "doggy games" pretending he was a dog, etc. But actually (kids are so awesome at that age) he was a LOT more concerned about whether my wife and I were doing okay. He kept asking us if we were happy, and trying to cheer us up. Every now and then he'll tell me he's been thinking about the dog or had a dream about him, and we'll reminisce about good times with the dog. He misses him, but he doesn't expect him to come back, and hasn't mentioned anything about the dog being "up in heaven" or anything like that. Anyway Ben's almost 4 now and he has a little brother or sister on the way and he's excited enough about the baby and about becoming a big brother that he hasn't mentioned the dog in awhile. Kids are pretty resilient like that, they look forward.
