You just can't crawl back into the caves. Technology is here to stay - the factories stem from the industrial revolution, we now have the technological revolution. There will always be things to manufacture, but it won't be the same as the old ones. We have an outdated system of huge companies manufacturing outdated products.

Look at beer or wine as example - small, innovative breweries are employing thousands of people making specialized products. The big companies are losing to them. Trump loves big business and is peppering his staff with big business people. The trend, however, is towards smaller, specialized businesses, and they are hiring more people and paying them better. Trying to save antiquated factories is not going to work.

Probably not as long as you think. Exponential advances mean just that, that time you're talking about is getting exponentially closer.

Not a damn thing you or anyone else can do about it. There might still be a small Luddite community in Pennsylvania Dutch country somewhere for you though.

Yeah so? But then you've created customers for your products in those outsourced areas and the life of the corporation may still go on.

Indeed.

But companies don't think that way. All that matters, when you have shareholders, is keeping your immediate Quarterly Earnings Report numbers high.

That leads to short-term thinking and a host of problems related to it.

It also can lead to outright fraud, in such an environment. For instance:

"Theology made no provision for evolution. The biblical authors had missed the most important revelation of all! Could it be that they were not really privy to the thoughts of God?" - E. O. Wilson

No dear. Find your blankey, and you'll be fine.
So that's what you're really all about. Fear of the future.

Trump will never reverse the long term trends of globalization and technical advance. He may *locally* and temporarily. Not world-wide.
China is about to land something on the moon. We couldn't even do that today.
TRAINING and RETRAINING is what will find work, if Americans want to compete and work. The days of de facto American superiority are gone forever. Health care in Northern European countries is as good or better than it is here, and here they are still fighting over who gets to have it.

Anyone who ever took Economics 101 knows that allowing comparative advantage to work is beneficial to all, not just Americans, who TODAY enjoy that relative advantage in many ways, (even while whining their lips off about it).

But now even the high court is hyper partisan. We used to have supreme court decisions that were mostly 9-0, 8-1 or 7-2. Now they're almost always 5-4 and split along party lines. Trump didn't win the popular vote, but the republicans hold the senate, the house, the presidency (as well as the majority of state legislatures and governorships) and soon a 5-4 supreme court majority. That is a mandate. That is absolute power. They can pass pretty much anything in any state or federally except a few ultra liberal states where dems have control and the supreme court will back them. And democrat policies that get passed at the state level won't have much luck of passing muster at the supreme court for the next 30-50 years.

The democrats are out of luck for a generation.

The Constitution has ALWAYS been open to interpretation. The voting patterns (which you have in no way have supported with evidence) have not changed. The Court has ALWAYS been partisan, in fact FAR MORE so. But I see you do live a a "rose colored galsses" fake past. Sorry the present is SO freightening to you. Not winning the popular vote is NO MANDATE, no matter how you spin it. It is NOT "absolute power" no matter how much you childishly claim it. They MUST follow the law, or they will be thrown out. The Supreme Court has not changed. Right now he has ONE appointment. One replacement judge for another conservative judge changes NOTHING, and depending on when the justices decide to retire, he may never have another chance, if they think hanging on for the pendulum to swing will matter. You clearly never took History 101 if you think trends in politics last a generation. This is a temporary blip. Enjoy your 15 minutes.

They're not "out of luck" now, and we'll see how long the snake oil salesman lasts.

Aren't we always complaining about overpopulation anyway? What better form of passive population control could their be than obsoletion through technology?

We will be able to fine tune the population in ways we can't even imagine. Thumbsup

The Luddites made this argument over 200 years ago. Went about breaking machinery because it threatened their jobs.

Oh dear! All those computerized robots. Perhaps you should get off the computer and stop using automation yourself.

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.
