Donating to friends who are aspiring Christian Missionaries
Hey everyone!

Some good friends of mine are aspiring Christian missionaries. They're pretty good friends - I was one of the groomsmen at their wedding.

They've been accepted into a 3 - 6 month missionary posting and are now looking to raise money. In the past I've donated a fair bit of money to their various trips, but now that I've become an atheist I feel hesitant to do so again. I took a look at the program they've been accepted to. It definitely has some good aspects. The group is involved in relieving poverty and providing care for orphans in Africa. They also provide medical services to people to poor to afford them. But, they have a heavy emphasis on converting Africans to Christianity. All of their bases run schools where they teach Africans how to be missionaries and start churches in their own villages.

I don't wish to strain the friendship, nor do I wish to be disparaging of something that is so important to my friends. At the same time, I'm not entirely comfortable donating money to an organization who has as one of it's primary objectives making Christian converts.

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone been in this situation who can tell me what they did and how it turned out?

I should mention, they know I'm an atheist. This is the first trip they've gone on since I told them about my de-conversion.

Maybe explain to your friends, tell them you'd be happy to donate to an organization that helps those people without an emphasis on converting. I hope they would understand as long as you were polite about it. If they are good friends I think you may get nothing worse then them talking about you behind your back. They'll get over it. If they don't get over it, it may just be time for you to part ways anyhow. It all depends on how strongly you feel about this conversion. I don't envy your position. Good luck!

I hate situations like that. I would politely beg off if asked.

Here in Africa everyone's already on one religious band wagon or another... it's unheard of to not be of some religion, especially in poorer areas - the poorer you are, the more God has done for you, it seems. So they'll mostly be preaching to already-converted people. Still doesn't mean you have to support it...

Could you have a talk with them and explain your position? Is it possible to donate directly to your friends (maybe their travel or living expenses, or bills that will need paid during their absence-storage unit) ? This way you are supporting your friends in their projects but not directly supporting an organization that requires belief before relief.

I wouldn't donate. I believe missionary work is inherently evil.

Yet if it weren't for their hard work, we wouldn't have the missionary position. Angel
