Oh, come on. You tried that already. You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave.

As a general statement that's correct, of course. Except that in this particular case, not one of the stabbed children died.

The gun lobby is fond of saying, "Guns don't kill people, people do." It'd be more accurate to say, "People kill people with guns, and guns make it easy for people to kill people."

People who should be treated for mental disorders kill people.

Hardly anyone gets treatment here in the states anymore. The streets are full of people who have been kicked out of mental institutions and are now homeless and begging in the streets. And I am not exaggerating, it is very common.

There is still such a stigma attached to being mentally ill that people don't even come forward for treatment. If they have a bad tooth they get it pulled, if they have a wart they get it removed, but if they are mentally unstable there is no treatment.

THAT is the core of the problem. It needs to change.

You guys make sure, eh? Where do you keep the bodies? Bemore's basement if it's Europe and Chas' backyard if it's the States, I guess...

But it won't. You can get the sheep riled up about big, bad evil guns, but to say we need to be more compassionate and caring for those who are mentally ill, fuck that. Give them a couple of pills and send them on their way.

Bottomline: Mental Health isn't as sexy as gun control.

It isn't an either/or situation, it's both.

Have I posted this on the forum somewhere else? Whatever, read this. It is geared towards the healthcare debate, but it highlights part of this problem too. The part about ignoring those we see as beneath us here in the good ol' USA.

It's second on my 'to-do' list, right behind the standard model.

That problem gets addressed by improving the gun laws.

That problem gets addressed by improving the gun laws.
The problem is far more effectively addressed by health care and social services reform.

Without an outright ban and confiscation, more gun laws won't do squat.
