Preach it, brother!

I grew up on 2E, but switched to 3.0 and eventually 3.5.

RE: Dungeons and Dragons
I only played original D&D at school and then moved onto other systems. I was quite shocked when I found out that Warhammer fantasy RPG was out of print. Call of Cthulhu was good as well. I never came across anyone else who wanted to play Dark Conspiracy. I bought the game and thought it would be really good but no one wanted to play it.

Last time I played an RPG was about 10 years ago.

Ditto.

It's not the math that primarily bothers me, it's the entire system's ass-backwardness. THAC0 is like the points system in American football; needlessly complicated for the sake of obfuscation. Why is there different tiers of Strength 18 (from 00 to 100) instead of just continuing in a linear progression to 19 and on just like all of the other attributes? It's senselessly stupid and obtuse...

And yes, that is my professional opinion as someone who majored in Game Design in college.

Edit: I talked to Rev about it when I was creating my char. and he told me he was using a modified version of AD&D and if I remember correctly THAC0 was one of the things he said he wasn't using. It gave me a sad! Sad

Onward, my faithful steed!

RE: Dungeons and Dragons
It was obtuse. The problem was, it was a bunch of subsystems tacked onto the main one over and over, with no rhyme or reason. It "works", but it's not fun to explain.

One thing I liked about moving to 3E was my players stopped asking "high or low" when I'd tell them to roll a d20.

Fun Fact:

The Wizard's d20 system is the basis for the official Star Wars RPG, and was subsequently used as the basis of the combat system in Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic.

That's a terrible example, because the Grapple rules are one of the worst parts of OGL d20. Also, the open source idea is great. After WotC ditched 3.5 for 4th, there was a massive amount of product still being supplied to 3.5 users from other independent publishers (like Green Ronin, Mongoose, White Wolf, etc.). Which is good, because 4th went over like a lead balloon...
