Here it is in the REAL world. It's not quite as cool looking though.

That's because CGI and artist's concepts are cheap and real world vehicles with 500,000 parts and 6 million lines of software code all integrated, tested with all design, manufacturing and test flight bugs worked out, in a mature configuration and readily available for consumer purchase and safe, reliable operation are neither cheap nor easy. Take it from a guy who designs aircraft for a living.

I bet you smash bugs with that aircraft. Sad

There are two insurmountable problems with a flying car.

#1. It solves a non-existent problem, insofar as addressing the "airplane gets you to where you want to go but once you get there how to you get to where you want to go" conundrum of airports goes. Transport to/from airports is not so inconvenient a flying car is cost or time effective.

But even allowing that #1 is an issue, #2 is fatal to the concept.

#2. Dings on a car are a cosmetics issue and don't hinder being able to continue using the car as a car. And dings are inescapable on the road out there with all those other drivers.

But you ding your flying car out on the road you don't have an airplane anymore you have a car. Airplanes work because airports are protected operating environments while on the surface. Nothing moves fast on an airport ramp, and there are many safeguards against dings. Dings on an airport are so rare that when they do happen it's on the news.

You can't ding an airplane and still have an airplane. Our club just totaled a rugged Skyhawk that got landed hard by a pilot who got distracted and neglected to flare. Bent the prop which by law requires engine teardown for inspection. Wrinkled the firewall and popped one rivet. One. The final slam down onto the runway after the first bounce deflected the wings down just enough to barely buckle the rear spars at the roots. No injuries, the "arrival" wasn't violent enough the pilot thought he'd hurt anything until he shut down and got out and looked and saw the prop tips curled.

And the rest of the damage only became apparent when the airplane was examined by experts who knew what to look for. It totaled the airplane - too much in repair costs. So it goes to salvage and the club has to find a replacement with the insurance money.

That's why the flying car can't work. It can't operate on the ground - doing so risks it staying an airplane.
