Education Blows
As a student of the past 20 or so years I have to say that the education system in the US just sucks donkey balls.

At the moment I am taking engineering courses at a public university.
There are some courses called socio-techinical systems that are required for a degree.

Now I ask you enlightened gentlemen to please explain to me what this,
http://www.giffordlectures.org/Browse.as...rticleID=5

Has to do with engineering?

This is the most boring pile of bull shit I have ever been forced to read in my entire life!
Its all just BS to feed the corporate machine. A degree that should take 2-3 years, takes 4-5, because you have to waste time on stuff like this.

RE: Education Blows
Interesting stuff I must say.

But I'm hardly enlightened so I do believe I shall refrain from answering in length.

Simply put, my understanding is: You gotta learn to appreciate the tech, eh?
How's that, good, bad, philos-bull?

Education blows if you have the right teachers.

That course is about critical thinking and analysis of the motivations and effects of technology. It will help you become a better engineer and a better human being.

Science is not a subject, but a method.

Of course they do quote C.S. Lewis there at the beginning. What university do you attend?

The subject is interesting and worthwhile.

The reading material you are provided is shit.

What Wikipedia says about Ian G. Barbour:
Quote:...an American scholar on the relationship between science and religion. ...

In his efforts to link science and religion in Issues in Science and Religion,
Barbour coined the term ‘critical realism’. This has been adopted by
other scholars. He claimed the basic structure of religion is similar to
that of science in some ways but also differs on some crucial points.

He's a theist trying to drag science down to his level. Coffeedrinker Also I think that page is from the 70s, so your university is *definitely* keeping up with the times.

E 2 = (mc 2)2 + (pc )2
614C → 714N + e + ̅νe
2 K(s) + 2 H2O(l) → 2 KOH(aq) + H2 (g) + 196 kJ/mol
It works, bitches.

Hey, it's not my fault in the humanities two people can both earn a PhD for each writing a paper arguing the opposite thesis.

And I agree a study of ethics is relevant to engineering. But it should
be limited to covering the established basics, and not get dragged into
circle-jerks between established academics.

Ah, not surprising since some areas of VA are quite religious.
