The first compilation, in 325, was aimed at ignorant, superstitious, illiterate peasants (who probably had their own taboos against incest, but didn't much care what the gentry or the ancients got up to. They knew about the priests already) and was supposed to be read by priests and interpreted by bishops. It didn't have to meet any sort of critical standard - just sound as if it went a long way back in tradition; as if it were rooted in the earliest times and came down in a straight line.

Later translators were too devout to tamper with what they regarded as holy writ. No leeway for updating; barely enough for more accurate Greek or Aramaic vocabulary.

It's not the mean god I have trouble with - it's the people who worship a mean god.
