WHY DO YOU FUCKING PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY THIS!?

I'm not asking rhetorically... I really want to know why it's always something you people throw out there, like it means something.

I mean, I know why you say it: you don't understand what "theory" means, when used in science, and you confuse it with the common-language use, where the word means "hunch" or "guess".

But surely you've said it to someone before, and that someone patiently explained to you that it doesn't mean what you think it means, but is actually the highest praise that science can pay to an idea, higher than even "law", which most people think is higher than theory in science ... so my real question, I guess, is why do you keep using it wrong?

Do you not realize how dumb it makes you sound, to people who actually know what the word means in scientific terms?

You know what else is "only a theory"?

The Theory of Gravity (technically, the Theory of Quantum Gravitation)

Germ Theory (it beat out the old theory of "invisible demons cause disease")

Atomic Theory (nobody tell Hiroshima that it's "just a theory"!!)

The Theory of Relativity

And about a hundred more theories that are the entire foundation of our thinking on those subjects, and the basis for all the advancements made in those fields.

Note the first two sentences in that entry on what a theory is:

A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed, preferably using a written, pre-defined, protocol of observations and experiments. Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge.

(Bold emphasis mine.)

So can you grasp why it makes you look so dumb when you combine the term "just" with "a theory"?

It's like saying "He's just a Nobel Prize winner" or "She's just a gold medal winner at the Olympics."

And yet, somehow, people who have been fooled by Creationists always use the phrase "just a theory", like they have some deep-seated need to be recognized as ignorant (not an insult... literally ignorant, as in "completely un-knowledgeable about a subject") by everyone they speak to on the subject.

Stop doing it. Seriously. Whatever else you think/say/do... that's one that's as stupid as trying to claim China is a country in Antarctica, and it makes people who know what the hell they're talking about look at you like you just claimed it was.

The klaxon call of someone who doesn't understand the difference between the colloquial usage of the word (a guess) and the scientific meaning of the word (a comprehensively tested and well justified expiation of the available evidence), and that the theory of evolution is the most well attested theory in science. Evolution is more well established, and has more evidence, than the theory of gravity.

Plus, that entirely ignores the distinction between the fact of evolution and the theory. Evolution is a fact, it happens, and denying it will not make that fact change. Much like the existence of gravity is a fact. But how does gravity or evolution work? That's the theory. The theory of evolution is how we explain the fact (a fact being both observable, demonstrable, and independently verifiable) of evolution.

Do you even know who the Canaanites venerated? They were polytheistic pagans, as were the earliest Hebrew. They worshiped a pantheon of deities, and Yahweh (YHWH, the tetragrammaton) was nothing more than their pantheon's god of war. He was Yahweh Sabaoth, a petty war god with jurisdiction over the region of Judea, and shared the pantheon with Baal, Ashera, and El Elyion/El Shaddai among others. All powerful creator of the universe he was not.

I wish I could believe that. But I know literally hundreds of (moderately) well-educated people, of honest intention and decency, who would say that same thing with a straight face.

Literally 40-48%, almost half of America. I wish that was a joke.

We can't write off over a hundred million people just because we've attained enough knowledge about a subject to realize that they speak from profound ignorance when they say this stuff. They're working through trying to justify such insane (to us) beliefs... but those beliefs are important to them, as a belief in a 6000-year-old planet and a literal Garden of Eden, Adam & Eve, snake-and-apple, and The Fall are central to their particular version of American fundamentalist/evangelical Christianity.

So, in defense of that all-encompassing perspective on religion, they will swallow any lies that charlatans (Creationist pseudo-scientists) tell them, which help them feel like there's a rational basis for such irrational beliefs.

Unfortunately for them, when they speak to people (including Christians who are not so poisoned by Creationist bullshit) who actually know what evolution is and how science works, they come across as total morons, and it's hard not to speak to them as if they are... especially when they just keep regurgitating the program they've been fed in prefabricated defense of these idiotic positions.

It's a very accurate statement about Trump, but maybe there is a very small chance that he's just a Poe ?
