They don't just believe it, they may believe that crossword puzzle messages are telling them messages in this grand meaningful existence revolving around them.

Define 'reason', 'everything' and 'happens'.

If you mistake the noun "a reason" with the verb "to reason" and forget that there are also causes then you can imagine that everything must have an intelligent agent with a goal for doing this and that.

RE: Everything happens for a reason
"Everything happens for a reason" annoys me as much as "god is testing your faith" or "you're going through this because god knows you can handle it." All of them are asinine comments.

In one of the several trips to the hospital recently to visit my father there was a nurse who saw the newspaper lying on a table in his room. She asked whether it was today's paper, and when my dad said it was from a few days ago she said with a serious face something to the effect of, "Then there's no use reading my horoscope if it's not for today." I'm pretty sure she's one of the "Everything happens for a reason" believers.

RE: Everything happens for a reason
Everything happens.

I prefer to leave it at that. You go any further and shit gets real complicated real quick. Not that it's not a worthy effort to try to figure it out, but with all of mankind's collective intellect combined over thousands of years, "shit happens" is the best we've come up with yet.

I'm okay with that.

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

The problem EHFAR is that is a lazy way to shirk responsibility for thinking things through. If god/the stars or whatever has a reason got doing things then there was nothing we could have done or could do to change our situations.

RE: Everything happens for a reason
I think some do actually believe that god "has a plan" and therefore things happen for that reason. I feel most of it is lip service because they don't know what to say. It's asinine really. If god had a plan for rape, starvation and disease, then fuck him.
