You know what is funny EK? I was talking to my friend about this while we were going to ocean city. I said that today we would rather have a dumbass with a degree than a intelligent mind with none.

There's no such thing as "libertarian economics". Just Economics. There's different types of economists, but they all work within the same frameworks and concepts. There are classical liberal economists, communist economists and Keynesian economists.

If you are referring to libertarians having adopted the free market as an economic system, then you are incorrect to say that their principle will never be again. The freedom and loosineing of trade and markets has in the last 20 years allowed China and India to lift up millions of people out of poverty, when the centralized economy of decades earlier couldnt.

Economic liberalism is the reason of the rise of places like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. A socialist centralized system can be accomplished in Northern Europe and North America (at a great cost but can be accomplished) but is often economically deadly in the 3rd world, as its been in many African countries, India (before the 90s) and China (before the 80s)

On the rare occassion we do go to McDonald's it costs us here around $30 bucks for 4 people, $10 more and we can eat at a far better place. What is really telling, are the employees. When I was in high school fast food employees were almost always high school kids with a manager who was in their 20s. Today, most of the workers are far older it's the manager's career.

Most of the parents of high school age kids we know, all agree there aren't as many work opportunities for their kids today. it's hard to find a job without work experience somewhere -- many of our friend's kids have never worked -- because they just can't find a job -- it's not because they're too picky.

Even the bagger's at the grocery store are older people (if they have them at all since most have been eliminated).

Then you have insane job requirements...like a Masters degree in education to teach kindergarten or in some cases even preschool depending on the school (academy). Or a Master's degree to be a librarian -- the pay is meh. By the time you retire you might have your student loans paid off. At least with teaching, after 10 years there's a program to forgive the rest of your student loans but not for everyone else.

We have a friend who is a doctor, he still has 100k in student loans and he's been practicing medicine for around 15 years.

This is just my 2 cents on a very complex issue that runs deep.

Student loans are just about the only debt you cannot remove by filling bankruptcy. You can be Mitt Romney and make a living gutting companies and running them into the ground, or Donald Trump and have casinos in your name even after having bankrupted more than half a dozen businesses; but if you are John Q. Public with crushing student debt then fuck you!

I don't know if this guy has the right answers, but his critique of the disaster of American economic policy and regulation seems spot on.

If people wish to lower the minimum wage, why should the general population put up with it? It may as well be a landowner serf society. But our ancestors rebelled against that already.

Also, a society moves forward with a health commerce. If a large proportion of the population cannot afford to spend money, the society falls in upon itself and becomes a third world economy.

As always I defer to history. Beware plebians, the patricians want your money and deeire you become their slaves.

Sorry I was a little bored with the other video that I don't think there's much different that I haven't heard from Keneysian economists before.

I'll try to watch it tomorrow.

Your understanding of economics (like many) works wrongly from the premise of a zero sum system and a lack understanding of demand and supply when it comes to labour.

I'll try to watch it tomorrow.

His name is Richard Wolff, he's an economic professor and very critical of capitalism. Among the points he raises is the lack of democracy within capitalism, the failure of the United States ability to regulate it, the change in the labor market that started in the 70's, and the failure of an economic system that creates massive wealth inequality and a failure to utilize capacity. He also gives a great history lesson, showing why capitalism did work and has changed in an effort to highlight why it is no longer working as well for average Americans anymore. He also puts forth a potential solution, to democratize capitalism for our benefit.

After watching a few of his lectures, it's changed some of my own thoughts and opinions considerably. Both videos are lecture presentations, not radio debates, so they're decidedly easier to listen to.
