RE: Extra-biblical accounts of apostles
We've had plenty of cult leaders in the 20th century convince hoards of people to kill themselves following their false prophet. People die for their convictions; true or false.

Some of these responses seem to be missing the point. It's entirely plausible that people might die for something they believe to be true. The argument about the Apostles is that they wouldn't have died for something that they knew to be false (i.e., something that they themselves made up). That is an entirely different proposition. In order to discredit that proposition, it doesn't help to give examples of people dying for their beliefs (even when those beliefs are false) -- if the people didn't know that their beliefs were false, it's not the same thing at all. You would have to show that the Apostles either (a) were not martyred at all, or (b) truly believed in Christianity and didn't just make it up.

Personally, I have not seen any convincing evidence outside of the Bible (and even there, it is very scanty -- only two Apostles die in the Bible, and one of those was Judas, who doesn't count) that any of the Apostles were killed for their faith.
