RE: "Faith" drives me nuts!
Hey there Searcher, good to have you here. Lots of different perspectives here, from all over the globe and nary a single soul. Wink

Oh, except for the occasional troll or wayward christee™ ... they seem to practically demand a soul. You may want to be aware of troll poo. Dodgy

Welcome to the forum family, from the bible belt, USA. I hope you like it here as much as I do!

RE: "Faith" drives me nuts!
Welcome Smile I'm sorry you've had to listen to that so many times.

Faith is continuing to believe what someone once told you, despite there being insufficient evidence for it, or indeed plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Learning by faith is like being a magnet that picks up the first thing it happens to come across, regardless of what it is. The magnet will never let it go, nor will it be able to pick up any potential better objects because it's clogged up with this first item.

If a method can show anything is "true", it is worthless. In reality, having religious faith in something is just saying you hope it is true, or perhaps you feel obliged to try and believe it's true.

I have a website here which discusses the issues and terminology surrounding religion and atheism. It's hopefully user friendly to all.

Welcome! I'm in a similar situation of being married to someone who is still Christian. My wife believes because of what she "feels". When I was struggling with not believing, I spent a lot of time worrying if I was failing some test and wondering what was wrong with me.

I avoid discussing religion like it was the plague, because we have had the discussion a million times and logic goes nowhere when up against "we believe because we have FAITH". It leaves me feeling like I am missing the faith gene or soul gene. She came home from church a few weeks back baiting me with: "The preacher said that people who don't believe in God have no soul". Oh boy, blood pressure rising! But I resisted, and just gave her a "that's nice hun".
I was raised Catholic and was even an alter boy in my youth. This all came into serious question when I learned that a number of God's hand selected apostles (his priests) were abusing children sexually. This floored me! I took a critical look at everything that was previously part of my FAITH and the logic behind my beliefs just fell away. I was just left with this: God is invisible, hidden, cloaked, and a mystery for no reason! An all powerful God could clear up the mystery whenever he wanted. Instead he hides and allows violent divisions to tear his children apart, and then places a gag order on 100 billion souls who have died and are "imprisoned" in an eternal spirit heaven. The first Golden Rule must be "NO CONTACT" with earthlings!!! Is Heavens Gate more like the Berlin Wall?

Hi searcher 2018. Welcome!

Ex-Catholic here myself. What you just wrote is exactly what I have been saying for a long time. It's even in my signature. If there was a god who created the universe and everything in it and plays some role in our everyday lives (answering prayers, overseeing births, calling us back when it is time (i.e., death), granting graces, blah blah blah, and who wants us all to worship and follow him, then obviously he wants us to know about him and faith makes no sense. We surely would have seen him - everyone would have.

RE: "Faith" drives me nuts!
Faith is nothing more than belief without evidence.
I don't see that as something to be proud of; more like the attitude of a rube, ready to be swindled.

As far as a "soul", I'll be happy to sell you one.
I already sold my left soul to Satan for beer, but you can have the right one for half a bottle of moderately decent single malt. Big Grin

Welcome to TTA.
