In my experience there have been two battles within the one war. The war can be described as Reality vs Fantasy/Supernatural. The battles are 1) the teachings and 2) the interpersonal rifts between family caused by the teachings, by far the most difficult one to survive unscathed.

This is simplistic but generally accurate. Because the beliefs are so personal and deeply held that any discussion that challenges them cannot be held in an unemotional and logical way. The strain this causes with loved ones is monumental and in turn psychologically damaging ergo your apt description of PTSD.
