Look, I already told you PS1-SAT-N64 is too late to be 'classic' Tongue.
(and also Grandia was originally a Saturn title, as it happens)

That leaves the rest of the FF series, which I didn't play until they were re-released on one the Playstation or through emulation.

I actually didn't play any of the titles on a Nintendo Tongue

I never knew Grandia was a Saturn release! That just blew my mind!

What's the cut off for classic? The newest game listed is (FF IX) 13 years old. The oldest PS gen titles I listed (Grandia and FF VII is 16 years old. The oldest title I listed (Dragon Warrior) is 27 years old

Yup. Years before it was ported to the PS1.

But it's your thread, don't let me be the arbiter of 'classic' Tongue.

Well, I forgot about your 2D rule. What about later games that were released as 2D, like Suikoden?

RE: Favorite Classic Turn Based RPGs?
I wonder if "classic" games are a hard line in history, or if it is a classification that shifts depending on the person.
Like how the oldies station used to play things from the 50s and 60s...but now you hear stations pulling out the "old school" hits from the 90s.

To me classics include anything that I grew up playing (so pretty much games made between 1990 and 2003). To those older than me, they may think of games from the early or mid 80s up until mid or late 90s.

Suikoden was 3D... wasn't it? I seem to recall the backgrounds were in glorious technicolour PS1 3D. And the sprites had some depth effects, no?

My rule can hardly apply to your OP Wink.

Not like it's hard and fast, but if I had to decide on eras, it's def pre-3D, SD 3D, and HD 3D. Obviously for computers that's blurrier (but pre- and post- home 3D acceleration works pretty well), but on consoles that's dividing up 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th generation...

wikipedia Wrote:The development team of the Suikoden series started developing games using 2D or two-dimensional graphics primarily used in the first and second games, while they only incorporated 3D graphics on environments and visual effects. Suikoden III however, marked the series' complete shift from 2D to 3D as the game jumps platforms; from PlayStation to PlayStation 2.

The first two were 2D, with some background 3D effects. Essentially it was a 2D game, however.

Jagged Alliance 2, you guys!

I mean, that's not even forgiveable. My uncle did voicework on that game. How could I forget it even if it weren't a masterpiece?

I played that game for years!

Who did your uncle voice?

Aspiring optimist
Eternal Pragmatist.
With the uncanny ability to see all sides in every argument.
