LolliGod, or JesusKebab. Father the Son and the holy sphincter.

In a way that would be better, because with him dying on a cross, every pair of intersecting lines can be called a sign from God, but if Jesus was killed by a single sharp stick, then there'd be so many signs from God that the Christians would probably give up that nonsense.

If something can be destroyed by the truth, it might be worth destroying.

I'll reiterate the hanging suggestion. I don't know if was invented yet or not, but drawing and quartering could be pretty good.

I read about this one from back in the Alexander the Great: he had two flexible trees tied so their tops were attached to the ground. Then, he had someone's arms attached to one tree and their legs to another. After that, the tie-down ropes were cut, the trees snapped back up to their vertical positions, and the guy was ripped in half. I like the thought of people wearing necklaces with pairs of trees on them.

Were that there a Song of Ice and Fire reference?

Thing is, the cross has become a symbol due to a long history of iconography. The original fishy thing didn't have the same pathos / death-serenity.

So anything too horrible, like maybe a pythonesque hand-grenade, would not have been useful for the artists. Likewise, drowning would not have given the opportunity for that final prayer?

In order to catch on, it would have had to have been something with similar suffering / serenity.

Consider

Flaying with whips?

No, too gruesome.

A very nasty paper-cut

So, every page of every bible would be printed with a red border.
