Favorite Literary Quotes [any subject]
I love those quotes that cut right to the heart of things.

"Brevity is the soul of wit" From Shakespeare's Hamlet

Here's a favorite of mine by Thomas Paine from "Age Of Reason"

"It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime. He takes up the trade of a priest for the sake of gain, and in order to qualify himself for that trade, he begins with a perjury. Can we conceive any thing more destructive to morality than this?"

Hehe, I could fill up the forum with just Terry Pratchett quotes, but I won't. I shall restrain myself:

"To surrender to ignorance and call it God has always been premature, and it remains premature today."
Isaac Asimov

“That’s what the gods are! An answer that will do! Because there’s food to be caught and babies to be born and life to be lived and so there is no time for big, complicated, and worrying answers! Please give us a simple answer, so that we don’t have to think, because if we think, we might find answers that don’t fit the way we want the world to be.”
Terry Pratchett - Nation

"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life."
Terry Pratchett - Jingo

"But the point is, find somebody to love. Everything else is overrated." - HouseofCantor

I LOVE Desiderata.

My mom would recite this part all the time when we growing up

Quote:You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

For nostalgic purposes, but also when I read it I just feel empowered still Smile

"Birth, and copulation, and death
That's all the facts when you come to brass tacks
Birth, and copulation, and death
I've been born, and once is enough.
You don't remember, but I remember,
Once is enough." - T.S. Eliot

Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?
I do bite my thumb, sir.
Romeo and Juliet

Here's a nice one from the series House, M.D.

"I always wanted to believe... Would have made my life a lot easier... It never took." - Dr. Chase explaining why he left the seminary

Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

My parents have it framed and hanging on a wall in their living room. I remember seeing it every day as a child and almost have it memorised.

RE: Favorite Literary Quotes [any subject]
... the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
Hamlet

The score is even,
or so it seems,
but then, I've had so many dreams.

The time has gone,
passed coldly through,
since all my thoughts were thoughts of you.

But wakened by
alarming chimes
think gently 'pon more rosy times

And try to lift
a drunken head
from sodden pillow on frantic bed.

Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
