RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
HARVEY DANGER - Flagpole Sitta

I had visions, I was in them;
I was looking into the mirror.
To see a little bit clearer
The rottenness and evil in me.

Fingertips have memories
Mine can't forget the curves of your body
And when I feel a bit naughty
I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes
(but no one ever does)

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot 'cause I'm in Hell.

Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding
The cretins cloning and feeding
And I don't even own a TV.

Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me
You told them all I was crazy
They cut off my legs, now I'm an amputee, God damn you

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot 'cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live so well

I wanna publish 'zines
And rage against machines
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine
The trivial sublime
I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind
You kill my mind, mind

Paranoia, paranoia
Everybody's coming to get me
Just say you never met me
I'm running underground with the moles (digging holes)
Hear the voices in my head
I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring;
But if you're bored, then you're boring.
The agony and the irony: they're killing me (whoa).

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot 'cause I'm in Hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live this well
(one, two, three, four)

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Been on a bit of a Kinks bender lately, kicked off by a recommendation from one of my Boomer-in-spirit co-workers. As with a lot of established artists who only get about two or three songs on regular airplay, I was surprised how prolific these guys' collection of hits really was.

Anywho, I was listening through the album Powerman and the Money-Go-Round, Pt. 1 in its entirety for the first time when the song "Apeman" came into the rotation. No sooner did it finish playing than did my thoughts hearken back to this thread. You could say this track belongs in the overstuffed file folder of songs that are #moretopicaltodaythanever.

Depending on who you are, you might find the whole bundle of lyrics and delivery to be sophomoric and a bit too on-the-nose. I find this kind of stupid shit timely and amusing and I can't stop cracking up. Gimme a break now, I'm not fully awake yet.

The opening melody to this sounds a bit like the one from "Lola," if that helps ease you into it. Give it a listen - if you dare - and if you resent me for it afterward feel free to excoriate me over a PM:

THE KINKS - Apeman

"think I'm sophisticated
'Cos I'm living my life like a good homosapien
But all around me everybody's multiplying
Till they're walking round like flies man

So I'm no better than the animals sitting in their cages
In the zoo man
'Cos compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees
I am an ape man

I think I'm so educated and I'm so civilized
'Cos I'm a strict vegetarian
But with the over-population and inflation and starvation
And the crazy politicians

I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an ape man
I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man

I'm an ape man I'm a King Kong man I'm ape ape man
I'm an ape man
'Cos compared to the sun that sits in the sky
Compared to the clouds as they roll by

Compared to the bugs and the spiders and flies
I am an ape man
In man's evolution he has created the cities and
The motor traffic rumble, but give me half a chance

And I'd be taking off my clothes and living in the jungle
'Cos the only time that I feel at ease
Is swinging up and down in a coconut tree
Oh what a life of luxury to be like an ape man

I'm an ape, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voo-doo man
I'm an ape man

I look out my window, but I can't see the sky
'Cos the air pollution is fogging up my eyes
I want to get out of this city alive
And make like an ape man

Come and love me, be my ape man girl
And we will be so happy in my ape man world

I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voo-doo man
I'm an ape man

I'll be your Tarzan, you'll be my Jane
I'll keep you warm and you'll keep me sane
And we'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day
Just like an ape man

I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voo-doo man
I'm an ape man.

I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore
And make like an ape man."

P.S.: I am both agape and shaking my head right now that no one's updated this thread in two-and-a-half-years. C'mon guys, there are so many poets, well-read purveyors social commentary, and meme aficionados out there. Do we really no longer derive anything of meaning from song?

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Time And Tide

I don't feel no pain no more
I don't feel no pain no more
I've left this cruel world behind
And I've found my peace of mind
I don't feel no pain no more

Time and tide are flowing over me
I once was blind but now I see
The answer lies within your heart
Memories are only 'bout the past
The present time will never last
The future lies within your heart

I don't feel no pain no more
I don't feel no pain no more
I've left this cruel world behind
I've found my peace of mind
I don't feel no pain no more

Yes I knew
I'm going home
Yes I know
I'm going home
When I reach the end
You know I'll find a friend
Yes I know
I'm going home
I don't mind if the sun don't shine
Or if it's pouring down with rain
There'll be a smile on my face
When I see you again

Oh yes I know
I'm going home
Yes I know
I'm going home
When I reach the end
I know I'll find a friend
Because I know
I'm going home

I don't care if the sun don't shine
Or if it's pouring down with rain
There'll be a smile on my face
When I see you again!

I don't feel
(I don't feel)
No pain no more
(Pain no more)
I don't feel
(I don't feel)
No pain no more
(Pain no more)
I've left this cruel world behind
And I've found my peace of mind
I don't feel no pain no more

Time and tide are flowing over me
I once was blind but now I see
The answer lies within your heart
Memories are only about the past
The present time will never last
The future lies within your heart

(Time and tide are flowing over me
I once was blind but now I see

Memories are only 'bout the past
The present time will never last
The future lies within your heart)

Those are some really philosophically heavy lyrics there, my friend. Pretty somber, contemplative tenor, too. The whole thing does give me a Watership Down vibe, and good idea what kind of story the The Plague Dogs is; I say this well-knowing nothing else about the film. Do you think the movie might be worth checking out? I really enjoyed Watership Down as kid, from what I can remember.

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Fade to Black

Life, it seems will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things are not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now he's gone
No one but me can save myself
But it's too late
Now I can't think
Think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm
Now I will just say goodbye
Goodbye...

It is similar to Watership Down.
I think it is worth checking out. I loved it. Mind you, I rather enjoy stories that dare to be dark and bleak; that leaves a lasting impression.

Hey that’s all right with me. Anyone who knows me well enough will tell you I’ve got a pretty high tolerance for dark and bleak. I liked “Mother,” after all.

Oh yeah, and that’s another pretty favorite:

“Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they'll like this song?
Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls?
Ooh, aah, mother, should I build the wall?

Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh, aah, is it just a waste of time?

Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry
Mama's gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama's gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won't let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama's gonna keep baby cozy and warm

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
Of course mama's gonna help build the wall

Mother, do you think she's good enough for me?
Mother, do you think she's dangerous to me?
Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh, aah, mother, will she break my heart?

Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry
Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through
Mama's gonna wait up 'til you get in
Mama will always find out where you've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
You'll always be a baby to me

Mother, did it need to be so high?”

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Here's another personal favorite of mine. This has always been a very moving, powerful piece for me, with a theme woven through the lyrics that's just so timeless it's actually kind of haunting.

In the Ghetto - Elvis Presley

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day?
Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see
Do we simply turn our heads, and look the other way?
Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car
Tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
And as her young man dies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
And his mama cries (in the ghetto)
(In the ghetto)
(Aah-aah)

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
The piano has been drinking, my necktie is asleep
And the combo went back to New York, the jukebox has to take a leak
And the carpet needs a haircut, and the spotlight looks like a prison break
And the telephone's out of cigarettes, and the balcony is on the make
And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking

And the menus are all freezing, and the light man's blind in one eye
And he can't see out of the other
And the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid, and he showed up with his mother
And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking
As the bouncer is a sumo wrestler cream-puff Casper Milquetoast
And the owner is a mental midget with the I.Q. of a fence post
Cause the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking

And you can't find your waitress with a Geiger counter
And she hates you and your friends and you just can't get served without her
And the box-office is drooling, and the bar stools are on fire
And the newspapers were fooling, and the ash-trays have retired
Cause the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking
The piano has been drinking, not me, not me, not me, not me, not me.

The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
From Sabbath:

Born in a window
Nobody's fool
Raised in a prison
You called a school
Taught your religion
Told what to do
I handed my childhood
Over to you

Traveling endlessly, I'm searching my mind
I'm almost afraid of what I will find
Wandering aimlessly, oh what can I do?
I handed my future over to you, to you

Over to you
Future looks blue
What can I do?

Working for freedom
Fighting your wars
Feeding our children
Keeping your laws
Someday you'll suffer
Then what I'll do
I'll hand all your promises
Over to you

Standing inside myself, I'm losing control
You made me believe in the stories you told
Waiting impatiently, what else can I do?
I handed my future over to you, to you

Over to you
Future looks blue
What can I do?

Tears full of sadness
Sealed in my cell
Whispering secrets
What do they tell?
Mad politicians
Can't tell it true
I handed my children
Over to you

All over, over to you
All over, over to you
All over, over to you...
