RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Matt Johnson (aka "the The") has always been one of my favourite pop/rock lyricists. I find him one of the most interesting lyricists when it come to his struggling with his faith or lack there of. He started out as an atheist/agnostic...became a believer...and is now back to being an atheist. One of his best lyrics is printed below. It's from his 1989 album "Mind Bomb". One of the things that is so striking about it is that it could have been written yesterday!

"Armageddon Days (Are Here Again)"

They're 5 miles high as the crow flies
leavin' vapour trails against a blood red sky
Movin' in from the East toward the West
with Balaclava helmets over their heads, yes!

But if you think that Jesus Christ is coming
Honey you've got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who's hi-jacked his name
He'll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

Islam is rising
The Christians mobilising
The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds

It's war, she cried, It's war, she cried, this is war
Drop your possessions, all you simple folk
You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes
You will thank the good lord for raising the union jack
You'll watch the ships sail out of harbour
and the bodies come floating back

If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today
He'd be gunned down cold by the C.I.A.
Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass
Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart
But God didn't build himself that throne
God doesn't live in Israel or Rome
God doesn’t belong to the yankee dollar
God doesn't plant the bombs for Hezbollah
God doesn't even go to church
And God won't send us down to Allah to burn
No, God will remind us what we already know
That the human race is about to reap what it's sown

The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds
Armageddon days are here again

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
REM is one of my all-time favourite bands. I loved them when they first started out and you couldn't understand a word Michael Stipe was sing...and I loved them even more when Stipe could be heard loud and clear. I find his lyrics, at times, almost heartbreakingly beautiful...especially when he sings about his personal beliefs (he's a non-deistic Buddhist). Here's one of my favourite lyrics...the title song from their much maligned (among critics) 2004 album "Around The Sun"

I want the sun to shine on me
I want the truth to set me free
I wish the followers would lead
with a voice so strong it could knock me to my knees

Hold on world 'cause you don't know what's coming
Hold on world 'cause I'm not jumping off
Hold onto this boy a little longer
Take another trip around the sun

If I jumped into the ocean to believe
If I climbed a mountain would I have to reach?
Do I even dare to speak?--to dream?--believe?
Give me a voice so strong
I can question what I have seen

Hold on world 'cause you don't know what's coming
Hold on world 'cause I'm not jumping off
Hold onto this boy a little longer
Take another trip around the sun

Around the sun
Around the sun
Around the sun
Let my dreams set me free.
Believe. believe.
Now now now now now now

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Neck Deep: Table's Turned

I felt the weather getting better, but I couldn't feel my feet
I always felt so cold in your company
I guess that maybe we should settle this
Blame it all on me
I don't care anymore, wont you please just let me be?

Bend the rules until they break
You always knew just how to make me fall to me knees
I felt so sick, ill at ease
But I'm getting better

And I hope that this time you finally see
That you can't get away with everything
I moved on and the world opened up for to me
The thought of you use to make me cave in
Gave you a chance but you threw it all away
The tables turned and there's nothing left to say
Done being a wall you lean against
Just needed some time so I could

Open up my window
Let the air clear out my head
Think how fast the years go and all the things I left unsaid
Another old regret that I'll hide beneath my bed
I guess some distance was the best cure for this
But rest assured it's not you I miss anymore

And I don't care where you lay your head at night

Because with you it's all swings and roundabouts
Gave you a chance but you still wouldn't hear me out
And I hope that it kills you I'm happy now
I hope you hate the taste of your own medicine
Those skeletons buried in my head
And all the thoughts I have of you make me wish we never met

And I don't care where you lay your head at night
I know I wont miss the smell of you in my room
You presumed that I'd feel the same

Drive home and think about the things I said
You never learn from this you just expect

You are my hesitant smile
You are my crippling doubt
You're everything that I hide about myself
You are every lesson I've learned with every leaf that I've turned
The very reason why I wont let this happen again

I found the side of myself I thought I left behind
And I'll do the same with you this time

By the power of Ra...
Mut...Nut...Khnum...Ptah...
Nephthys...Nekhbet...Sobek...Sekhment...
Sokar...Selket...Reshpu...Wadjet...
Anubis...Anukis...
Seshmu...Meshkent...Hemsut...Tefnut...
Heket...Mafdet...
Ra...Mut...Nut...Ptah...
Hemsut...Tefnut...Sokar...Selket...
Seshmu...Reshpu...Sobek...Wadjet...
Heket...Mafdet...Nephthys...Nekhbet...Ra...

So you think you've got friends in high places
With the power to put us on the run
Well, forgive us these smiles on our faces
You'll know what power is when we are done
Son...

You're playing with the big boys now
Playing with the big boys now
(oh that's pretty)
Ev'ry spell and gesture
Tells you who's the best, you're
Playing with the big boys now

You're playing with the big boys now
You're playing with the big boys now
Stop this foolish mission
Watch a true magician
Give an exhibition how
Pick up your silly twig, boy
You're playing with the big boys now!

[chorus]
By the power of Ra
Mut, Nut, Khnum, Ptah
Sobek, Sekhmet, Sokar, Selket
Anumbis, Anukis
Hemsut, Tefnut, Meshkent, Mafdet...

[Hotep and Huy]
You're playing with the big boys now
You're playing with the big boys now
By the might of Horus
You will kneel before us
Kneel to our splendorous power...
You put up a front
You put up a fight
And just to show we feel no spite
You can be our acolyte
But first, boy, it's time to bow
(Kowtow!)
Or it's your own grave you'll dig, boy
You're playing with the big boys, playing with the big boys,
playing with the big boys,
playing with the big boys, playing with the big boys,
Playing with the big boys
Now!

What can I say, I like Egyptian god names.

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
America has been conquered by a fundamentalist crusade
That holds god above our heads to keep the masses afraid
We’ve surrendered sensibility to a morbid spirituality
Shackled by what passes as Christian morality
Opening the bible for justification to close millions of minds
Beating back evolution with “Intelligent Design”
Displaying the flag, side by side, with the crucifix
To sanctify the marriage of religion with politics
In an effort to shield conservatives from a political loss
Jesus, himself, has climbed down from his cross
And while he’s warmly embraced at the GOP’s political rallies
His enemies have been banished to the closets and back alleys
Forever cast out by the “party of inclusion”
That triumphs in the nation that suffers from delusion
Constructing god’s church on a foundation of oppression
Dragging our society down the pathway of regression
Independent thought has been stamped out by indoctrinated opinion
We’ve descended into the depravity of this gutter religion
Christianity infects America like a spiritual plague
Spreading putrid intolerance with their “moral” tirades
They try to whitewash their hypocrisy with more insidious lies
But in the ethical gutter is where their morality resides
Get down on your knees if you want to exist
Ignorant superstition
Bigoted tradition
Because god rules this country with an iron fist
Indoctrinated opinion
Gutter religion
Zealotry is summoning god’s vengeance for threatening voters
With the fires of hell and natural disasters
Parting the political waters for the conservative ideologues
God has granted sole authority to his moral watchdogs
There will be no mercy for those who resist
Ignorant superstition
Bigoted tradition
Because god rules this country with an iron fist
Indoctrinated opinion
Gutter religion
Rule of law- under the iron fist
Sexual preference- under the iron fist
Women’s rights- under the iron fist
Indoctrination under the iron fist of god
Education- under the iron fist
Social funding- under the iron fist
Science and medicine- under the iron fist
One nation under the iron fist of god
Polluting the fields of education, science and medicine
Corrupting the FDA to deny access to emergency contraception

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Welcome to out sanguinary sect of worship.
Feel at home in our black conventicle,
As we anathematise
All of those who oppose us.
Don't summon the devil,
Don't call the priests,
If you need the strength
The conjuring. Obey!!!
Behold the flames rise
From the compass' cardinal points.
Burn the sacred oil,
And, with the ashes you'll annoint.
Arrange the symbols,
Of the wizard, and, magician.
Light the candles,
Place the parchment paper in position.
Between it's leaves place
The lash from a black cat's eye,
A straw of a broom,
Fold, and, burn, and, centralise.
Don't summon the devil,
Don't call the priests,
If you need the strength,
The conjuring.
I am the devil's advocate,
A salesman, if you will
You know my name. [You know my name]
I met your father years ago,
Gave him what he'd please.
He called my name, you'll do the same.
I'm claiming what is mine by right,
It's time to close the deal.
You're bought and sold, bought and sold.
Come join me in my infernal depths,
Mephisto's hall of fame.
I've got your soul, I've got your soul.
The conjuring. Obey!!!

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
Of course Judith by A Perfect Circle:

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
Fuck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Make it Stop (September's Children) by Rise Against:

Bang, bang, go the coffin nails
Like a breath exhaled, been gone forever
It seems just like yesterday
How did I miss the red flames?

Raise these back, the days we left
We braved these bitter storms together
Brought to his knees, he cried
But on his feet he died

What God would damn a heart?
And what God drove us apart?
What God could?

Make it stop, let this end
Eighteen years pushed to the ledge
It's come to this, a weightless step
On the way down singing

Woah, woah

Bang, bang, from the closet walls
The schoolhouse halls, the shotgun's loaded
Push me and I'll push back
I'm done asking, I demand

From a nation under God
I feel it's love like a cattle prod
Born free but still they hate
Bore me, no, I can't change

It's always darkest just before the dawn
So stay awake with me
Let's prove them wrong

Make it stop, let this end
Eighteen years pushed to the ledge
It's come to this, a weightless step
On the way down singing

Woah, woah

The cold river washed him away
But how could we forget?
Gathering the candles
But not their tongues

And too much blood has flown from the wrist
Of children shamed for those they chose to kiss
Who will rise to stop the blood
We're coming for, insisting on
A different beat, yeah, a brand new song

Disparity by Design by Rise Against:

All the way at the bottom
Of the barrels we cry out
So ashamed of our tears that
We blame only ourselves
That's when they win
They keep us convinced
To lift up our chins
These playing fields are level
We all have a chance
With that they dismiss
The fast lanes they rode
In which access depends
On who you know
Or where you came from
Whose daughter are you?
Whose fortunate son?
We're told
To stick out our thumbs
They feast from the linens
While we settle for crumbs

Is this an over-reaching arm?
Or is this compassion?
Is this a handout undeserved?
Or a just reparation?
(A just reparation)

All the way from the towers
High above glass ceilinged tombs
Tell themselves
That they've earned this
By working hard
And playing by the rules
But this is only part true
A dangerous trick
Played on me and you
And so like a practical joke
We pulled on these bootstraps
So hard that they broke

Is this an over-reaching arm?
Or is this compassion?
Is this a handout undeserved?
Or a just reparation?
And like a single domino
That falls while the rest stay vertical
We're fed these empty fairytales
Oh will you believe them?

And if there's a God
You better pray
That this sleeping giant never wakes

If we just took a step back
A bigger picture we might view
Perhaps the man in the gutter
Is not so different from you

Come in, out of the cold
Forget all that you know
Because there's always been room
By the fire for you, oh
Come in, out of the cold

Will you believe them?
Is this an over-reaching arm?
Or is this compassion?
Is this a handout undeserved
Or a just reparation?
And like a single domino
That falls while the rest stay vertical
We're fed these empty fairy tales
And I'm through believing

On the Turning Away by Pink Floyd
On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

From Song of Myself by Nightwish, in fact this entire song moves me deeply:
Ever seen the Lord smile?
All the care for the world made Beautiful a sad man?
Why do we still carry a device of torture around our necks?
Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is
All you bible-black fools living over nightmare ground.

Much more, but I will wait to post them.

"Good news, everyone!"

RE: Favorite Song Lyrics
"On Nights Like Tonight" by Matthew Good

On nights like tonight, when no one's around
I put on the record, the record I found
When I was a kid and the world was a town
And Heartbreaker weren't nothing painful

Carry me Mother Mary I'm faithless
Like Sister Theresa, canonized, faceless
The press release leaves the plagiarist nameless
And all is forgiven

On nights like tonight, when no one's around
I sit in the dark on my hands on the ground
And I smile like the devil smiles, unseen but proud
Truth be told I don't know

Who's at the helm
Just sit tight
And I'll make my way to you
And I'll make my way to you

If I'm not on time
Remember that I tried

Carry me Mother Mary I'm faithless
Like needles in haystacks that we just replace
It's all the same monster that nobody faces
Where all is forgiven

On nights like tonight, when no one's around
I turn off the lights and I float off the ground
And I smile like I used to when you were around
But truth be told I don't know

Who's at the helm
Just sit tight
I'll make my way to you
I'll find a way to get to you

I don't know who's at the helm
Just sit tight
And I'll find a way to get to you

PROPAGANDHI - Ite[/b]ration[b]
Donald wept through the proceedings. His tears soaked through the canvas that cloaked his twisted face and they stained his orange jumpsuit where with such rare distinction he once displayed the evidence of his outstanding contributions to the maintenance of a kingdom come. But those days are gone. He’s nothing more than a number on a docket thick with shareholders, engineers, PR firms, politicians: war-profiteers. How the fuck did I end up here? This just isn’t fair. Ain’t no place for a millionaire. He searches for the words to stop this table in mid-turn, like “we are but old men” and “we only did what we were told,” but the laughter from the gallery drowns out these vestiges of a profession’s oldest defense. The court will direct the record to reflect compliments from the bench; you sir, are central casting’s crowning achievement. And for your outstanding performance in a comedic role, I’d like to dedicate the findings of the jury to the dead. But how can one man ever repay a debt so appalling? Can’t gouge 10,000 eyes from a single head so I think we should observe a sentence that will serve to satisfy both a sense of function and poetry: so you will spend the rest of your days drenched in sweat, with your face drawn in a rictus of terror as you remove another buried land mine fuse. Meanwhile, 100 yards back behind the sandbags, a legless foreman pulls the trigger on a red megaphone. Squelching feedback. Drunken laughter. Broken English. His dead daughter’s picture. Time and tide, no one can anticipate the inevitable waves of change.

PROPAGANDHI -Supporting Caste
When the credits finally roll for this, the worst story ever told,
don’t bother sifting through the names for yours or anyone you know.
Unless they were by chance a shepherd king, a virgin birth,
a resurrection, a messianic prince or some such childish thing.
You can storm the edit suite or move to block its theatrical release,
but I think we can safely guarantee
that there will be no revisions
to the script made on behalf of a supporting cast(e).

Because history exalts only the pornography of force–that of murderers
and psychopaths (the rest of us, of course,
stricken from the narrative wholesale: a back drop to the tale)
as we, the two-bits, are ushered on and swiftly off
this stage with the jawbones of asses.
No stirring curtain call for the masses.
No floral bouquet.
No breaking of legs.
No recurring role.
No artistic control.

And so in these days, in this terminal phase,
it’s all left to chance.
A piece of advice: if you’re cast on thin ice,
you may as well dance.
Do what you feel you must,
but as for me I was not put upon this earth to subjugate or serve.

There can be but little liberty on earth while men worship a tyrant in heaven. - Robert Green Ingersoll
