Why are saints so often depicted rubbing the middle and forefingers together?

You know I would love to give some sort of explanation like how when one signs oneself with the Sign of the Cross, the middle and forefingers are joined together to show the union of Christ's divine nature and His humanity*, but in the case of artwork...I honestly don't know! Sorry Sad

*Actually that's why that happens in the Sign of the Cross in Catholicism, it's known as the Hypostatic Union of Jesus's human and divine natures. In Eastern Orthodoxy, the ring and pinky fingers are joined and kept down into the palm to represent the Hypostatic Union, whereas the middle, forefinger, and thumb are brought together to represent the Trinity.

Need to think of a witty signature.
