RE: Feel Unrepresented by the US 2-Party System?
No enough time today to read through the whole thread but if no one else has mentioned it, you need to Google "Duverger's Law". There are never going to be more than two parties with national power in the US, given how things are organized here. Without vast systemic change to make us more of a parliamentary system or to have, say, Australian-style voting systems, there inherently can't be more than two national parties. This is one of the few things actually considered a rock-solid law in politics. So grousing about how you don't feel represented by the two party system is kind of a waste of time.

Ironically Bernie Sanders understands this and steadfastly refuses to be drafted to form a third party. Some of his more knee-jerk supporters don't understand this. That he should fail to strike out on his own, bursting, as it were, out of the chest of the dying and corrupt Democratic Party, makes no sense to them. But he knows better. He's working within the system, and quite effectively, I might add.

What COULD of course happen is that one of the parties could completely disintegrate and be replaced by an entirely new party, but the last time that happened (to the Whigs) we got knock-on effects like a horrific civil war for our troubles.

In any case if there is a party coming apart at the seams and clearly unable to govern right now it is the GOP.

We'll just have to see how it all shakes out.

Yes, I think the GOP is going to have to drop their extreme right wing to be able to function properly again. That may be the silver lining to the Trump presidency -- a new coalition for Republicans -- at least if he doesn't destroy the party all by himself.

Either way, I'm ready for an AI branch of the government in the hopefully not too distant future.
