Quote:How often can you play as a not stereo typically attractive man? More so than you can for the ladies.

I dunno know about this. I think you might be right to some degree but I disagree that there aren't plenty of unique female characters in games.

If the main character is male there is more often than not plenty of good female characters throughout the story.

Also Mario is a poor example because while he's a plumber, he's a cartoon and he's obviously some weird semi-racist stereotype of Italian people.

Quote:How often are ladies expected to show more skin and be suggestive? More so than the men.

Not really. In games where women are dressed in a sexual manner the men in that game often are too. Ninja Gaiden for example the main character has these uncovered muscular arms.

I'm not defending Quiet from MGS though, Hideo Kojima is a dirty pervert. Tongue
Some of the cameras angles in that game of Quiet and the whole character in general.. what even was that...
THOUGH they do do it to Snake in the opening mission at the hospital.

RE: Feminism in Gaming
I guess I'm very sensitive to feminism. I play this game like crazy, and there are plenty of ugly chicks in it.

Too bad the giant blue snake monster from Primal Rage is still one of the best original and empowered playable and conventionally unattractive female characters in gaming.

Giant, blue, snake monster.

From an arcade fighting game.

Released over 20 years ago.

Bare arms are equal to bare arms plus exposed thighs, cleavage, and midriff? Rachel is overtly sexualized in that game in a way Ryu Hayabusa never is. Unless I missed something, her cleavage is for the benefit of eye candy, and not part of some weird in-game justification for making her a better demon hunter.

Now, if that's what the game designers want to do, more power to them. But don't pretend they're not doing it.

Comparing Big Boss in a hospital smock to Quiet?

That's because men and women are sexualized differently.
They're not gonna show some man cleavage or man thigh. I don't wanna see some man thigh, that shits just nasty. You wanna see some man thigh EK?
Women wanna see big muscles and abs on a guy, maybe a big crotch, and guys wanna see big tits and sexy legs on females. Just because women are sexualized differently to men doesn't mean men aren't sexualized.

I would buy your argument, if Ryu was bare chested and in short shorts. Or otherwise in similar S&M gear to Rachel, with an emphasis on showing off his package. I mean, for fuck's sake, look at that cleavage and jiggle.

But he isn't.

And that's fine, that's what the game designers wanted. They wanted a beefcake ninja and a bosomed sidekick they could show off their jiggle physics with. But don't pretend like Ryu was designed for the benefit of female spectators in the same way Rachel was designed for the enjoyment of male spectators, because he isn't.

You want equal cheescake? Check out Monster Hunter.

You want a female character who owns her sexuality for her own empowerment, and not just the gratification of the viewer?

I give you Bayonetta.

So what? Just because there are different opinions that are conflicting with each other doesn't mean that they can't all be wrong. Virtually everything you said is true about Christianity as well, but that doesn't stop any of us from viewing the whole thing as bad. The different branches of third-wave feminism happen to share certain fundamentals much like the different Christian denominations. They're all based around the false notion that women in Western countries aren't already equal to men. Some of them are fraudulent, hypocritical and even downright misandrist.

No, we're having this conversation because you decided to get butthurt over a type generalization that you've made about other multi-faceted ideologies in the past as well.

Right, so hyperbole it is then. Drinking Beverage

Heaven forbid I try to have a more in depth discussion about games in the gaming section.

RE: Feminism in Gaming
Ok I have flown over that back and forth there.
I still don't see a problem with sexualized women in games equally to me not seeing a problem with sexualized men in games.
Not all humanoids are sexualized in games anyway. Make them completely nude for all I care. I just wanna play the game.

Although generally, I do prefer some eye candy in the games I play and that would be some sweet boobs for the ladies or a nice crotch for the guys. Let me have my eye candy please?
Yes a strong lead character is great, but not all games have that and that is fine as long as the game is still good and fun to play.
And what makes the game fun for someone differs from person to person, I love real time, action packed strategy (big surprise) and other's want a story driven game while another category prefers Tetris.

Chill and play I guess. That is just my silly opinion though.

An afterthought.
I'm not defending the character Quiet as a model for equality in games because she's obviously purposely overly sexualized, I'm just saying that Hideo Kojima isn't beyond zooming in on naked man butt 5 minutes into the game.

Feminism in Gaming
Some game designers are just gonna be who they are in their desire to push their humor or scantily fashion of some.

Kojima in his early 90s adventure games would have the open choice option to squeeze girls chests. Its a legit thing in policenaughts and snatcher. Besides in other metal gear solids had a very clear jo room scene you can get. Some stuff just gets thrown in there to perv out intentionally.

He also had the male character you play as butt showing naked running around in games in parts you can't really fight because the guys covering up his junk with his hands.
