Also, I currently avoid UbiSoft PC releases like the plague, because fuck them and their piss-poor DRM, lack of optimization, and general all-around anti-consumer bullshit (fuck uPlay especially).

I agree on the whole ubisoft drm. But I'm extremely confused by "...an old 2.66GHz Intel Dual-Core quad."

Is that dual or quad?

It is four cores, but it was still branded under the 'Core Two Duo' series.

RE: Finally building a new gaming rig!
I found that 1080p needed AA on my old 27" monitor. After switching to 1440p 27"s I haven't needed more than 2x AA, which certainly bridges the performance gap from the increased resolution. I'm pretty sure that no AA would be needed on 4K, but with my mediocre eyesight, I can't justify buying any 4k displays.

RE: Finally building a new gaming rig!
My current rig is pitiful.

Dual amd 2.9, 4g ram, and a Ati Raden HD...4350? 5430? Something like that. Undecided
Just as a benchmark. I can play AC Brotherhood, I can possibly play AC3, I can play GTA4, Sims3, etc.

No way I can play anything that was published this year, but still older games are cheaper and buy the time I get around to them, the bugs are fixed, patches are out, etc.

Well I'll be buggered...

Plugged my old gaming tower into the router this afternoon, and behold... It actually works!

It's still got Windows 7 on and won't play most of my old games, but at least I can patch the ones that do.

I find that hard to believe. Which games are you playing, using which settings and at what framerate? Consider
1080p gaming is possible on many setups with a dedicated GPU nowadays. A GTX 770 can max out most games at 1080p. 780 can max out a lot of games on 1440p. No single GPU cards on the market can max on 4K. That's going to require one or two more generations.

Skyrim @ 1080p, High, 35~45FPS
Saints Row @ 1080p, Medium, 35~45FPS
Payday 2 @ 1080p, Medium, 30FPS
Mass Effect 3 @ 1080p, High, 45~65FPS
Dragon Age II @ 1080p, High, 55~65FPS
Farcry 3 @ 1080p, Low, 25~35FPS (<-buggy piece of shit)
Anything less than max settings @ 60fps is an offense to PC gaming master race eyes. Laugh out load

I realize that you've said it in jest. But, there are usually ridiculous options that provide little to no visual improvement, while significantly reducing frame rate. Who the hell needs 32x AA?... FXAA(fast&effective) vs MSAA(why do I even exist?).

The Witcher 2 is the best example in that regard. It has this option called "Ubersampling" which makes no discernable difference, yet is so demanding that no single GPU can run it smoothly. It pretty much cuts the framerate in half.

I was going to mention that exact example, but I wasn't certain I remembered whether it was noticeable or not.

Ok not to go full tinfoil hat here but what if that was put in just to dick with the people that have to have max settings on everything. Sort of a practical joke.
