First synthetic yeast chromosome created
Well, I donno what this means. I'm more of an artsy-fartsy gal but I love science even though I don't understand all of it. So anyway...........

What does one do with synthetic chromosomes? Huh

Well, you could mess around with the genes a bit, and after a bit of practice, you could make a real-life crocoduck. Laugh out load

It is a step in learning to make useful ones.

“You can see that they are systematically paving the way for a new era of biology based on the redesign of genomes.”

Essentially, this is a huge step towards being able to completely engineer a genome. What they've accomplished is only a small fragment of the whole, but it's huge. Being able to engineer an entire genome fully synthetically would have the potential to change entire species and possibly create new ones based on existing genomes.

It's awesome and scary all at the same time, but mostly exciting. I can't wait to have my own pet crocoduck!

Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense. You're just not keeping up.

For right now, I think the implications aren't going to grab headlines---No croc-a-ducks. To me, the research seems to take the approach of "let's try to figure out how nature works." We have sequenced genomes, but there's a lot we don't know, so, what's one of the best ways to figure something out?

Engineer/build it yourself. Find out what works. Find out what doesn't work. Find out what works in tandem. Find out what is needed or not needed. Find out what switches things off an on.

Kind of equating it to reverse-engineering. We have this model of life, so let's try to build it from scratch. Maybe during the process we'll come to some amazing conclusions/discoveries.

So many things can be learned from this---many of which wouldn't be newspaper headlines, but still get scientists 'giddy.'

Also as Chas says they're learning to do this in practical applications.
They used zinc-finger "gene-splitting" in a few experimental cures that were pretty spectacular in the past few years,

and now a group in California has figured out how to vastly accelerate the process.
"Drive-in" Immunology is finally in sight. Drive by the "blood-draw" window, stick out your arm. They draw your blood sample. Couple weeks later you come back, and they inject the custom-made cure. Smartass
